"Happy birthday mom!" I screamed as I presented my gift to my mom. She opened it and an intricate musical box with a ballerina in a red tutu pirouetting played a joyful tune of my mom's favorite song. "I made it myself,"I said proudly after seeing my mother's eye sparkle with happiness.
"I...thank you sweetie!!!"was the last words I heard from my mother. She then fainted. Mom has experienced migraines from time to time but none of us payed any attention to it. We all brushed it off thinking it was because of the stress she's going through, but she's never fainted! Out of panic, we just rushed off to the hospital in our pajamas.
After struggling to get mom safely into the car we rushed off to the hospital. When we arrived at the hospital we barely noticed the amount of eyes that were on us. Mom got sent to the ER, me and my dad waited outside. We didn't know what to do except to be afraid...
After some crying and the occasional sniffles, the doctor finally came out."She has brain tumor. Don't worry, it's minor, nothing but a surgery can't fix. Here's the bill."The doctor said in a matter of fact tone. The bill wrote $72183.95. "Where am I going to get that much money?" As I sat down and watch my father cry, my mind started to wander off. I began to think of the possibilities of my mom surviving and what my life would be like without her.
A week's passed, me and my dad still can't get enough money for the surgery. Putting together our savings we only have $3487 to offer. I started doing odd jobs but my father started drinking.
At the end of the month we ended up using all of our savings due to my dad's smoking problems and I started losing hope. I've burned the candle at both ends handling my school work, my dad's drinking and my mom's surgery. Every day it's school, work, homework and housework.
"Dad, please, please stop drinking!"I finally worked up the courage I needed to confront my dad."
"Go away!!! Or you'll be sorry!"
"No please! Remember mom?! We're fighting for her! You love her, don't you? Would you want her to see you like this?! Do you really wanna give up on her?! You always taught me to stay strong! But look at you now! Dad please I'm begging you! Please give up drinking"
"I... stop bothering me! Your mom, she's as good as dead! now go away!!!"
I sighed and turned away but shortly after I turned around, I hear the sound of my father putting down his beer and sobbing.
"I'm sorry... I failed! I failed you and you mom..." "Well, you can make it up to us by quitting."
He didn't answer but he throwed the half empty bottle of beer away and went to his room, if you ask me, that's the best thing that ever happened after mom being diagnosed with cancer.
For the first time in what seemed like ages, I felt a ray of hope, and I had to tell myself to grasp it tight because everything will fall back into places so long as I don't lose hope.
