The Farm-Chapter 1

December 25, 1939

Hello Im Ruth, I just got this diary for Christmas. I might as well write a bit, Im 31 years old im married with 2 kids Ethel (13) and Peter (14). My Husband, Alex, is 34 we have been married for 18 years. Of course there is the war, I try to forget it but it is hard to. Today was a great day, I got Peter an toy Airoplane, Alex made it for him out of a tin can. Ethel got a new doll, I made it for her myself, it is quite hard with the clothing rationing going on but I rummaged a flower sack and made it. My husband got a new shaving kit, and I got a pen and a diary.

It is later in the day now we have just eaten dinner, I nearly burnt the pudding. The Damned stove makes sure of that, I have gargled on and on about getting a new electric stove, all the girls at church have one. Sadly I'm stuck with this old coal range. Did I mention that the generator quit on us today, I plugged in the toaster and then we heard it stall and then stop. Well now I have to go and change all the candles for the night, good night.

December 26, 1939

I'm back again, Alex fixed the generator today turns out the spark plug was fouled. If we lived in the city we wouldn't have to worry about a generator. I could be more positive though there are supposed to be gas attacks in the cities and bombings too. Well it has been half a year now and all I hear on the radio is what's "Going to happen" nothing ever happens. Our newspaper calls it a "Phony War" and I believe them, I thought there were going to be invasions, bombs, bloody hell on earth, so anticlimactic. I'm obviously kidding, we are all glad it doesn't happen. Me husband has gone fishing, in these quiet winter months that's our main income.
