Genre: Crime
Generated Opening Line: "481,285 people died that winter but there was only one that mattered to me."
Of course, my family was alive and well back home, celebrating my father's promotion. I, however, had been shipped out with the rest of the team to investigate an act of terrorism- another series of explosions which had resulted in thousands and thousands of deaths across a number of weeks. It had been labelled as a mass murder, but that was merely an understatement. Standing here, peering down at the arrays bodies littered in debris and broken glass, I couldn't rip my gaze from a young boy's hand, gripping to another- his mother, sister, friend, stranger- they may have all been strangers. But not to everyone, not to their families or their friends who would've scanned this report with dreaded eyes and awful, cruel anticipation. Waiting to see if their young boy had been blasted to smithereens, crushed, mauled, maimed, mangled. Perhaps he didn't matter to me. None of these people did, not really. But I had always been seen as an over-thinker. I found myself spiralling, in that moment, forcing down nausea as I looked deep into the child's lifeless eyes with a heart-wrenching sympathy. I could only do my job. I could only do what I was trained to do. I could only do what was possible, as a human being, and walk away, doing my part to avenge him and the thousands of friends and family members sprawled dead beside him.
