Chapter 1

"It seems that the ghoul that was faced by Rank 2 Investigator Urie from the Mado Squad yesterday wasn't Torso."

I sat in a small meeting room at the CCG building.

Right next to me were Senior Investigator Akira Mado and Rank 1 Investigator Sasaki Haise, and in front of me sat Senior Investigator Shimoguchi Nobu and one of his underlings.

There was also First Class Investigator Ito Kuramoto and next to him was Senior Investigator Hirako Take.

"Because Torso is our main focus, I'd recommend that the Mado Squad investigate something else," Shimoguchi continued, "Now that I mention it, when there's a report on ghoul sightings, a lot of days were spent to handle the case, and it turns out to be only a wild dog or some kind, right?"

Haise nervously smiled.

"Well, that's a pity," Haise said.

"Don't smile like that, Rank 1 Investigator Sasaki," Shimoguchi said.

Haise's smile disappeared.

"Those Quinx of yours only made the CCG bankrupt without any leads," Shimoguchi complained.

I sighed.

"About that-"

"Besides, recruiting them who are either human or ghoul it's just..." Shimoguchi cut my sentence.

Shimoguchi sighed.

"You also failed to kill the taxi driver yesterday," Shimoguchi exclaimed.

Haise and I gulped.

"Why should you let a useless ghoul like that live?" Shimoguchi asked.

Haise leaned forward a bit.

"But sir-"

"Do you pity ghouls?" Shimoguchi cut his sentence, "It could be like that, considering you're also a ghou-"

"Senior Investigator Shimoguchi," Akira cut his sentence, "Training them is my job, that's why I'll be the one to scold them."

"Senior Investigator Mado, are you sure that your so-called training is enough?" Shimoguchi asked, "I'll tell you once again, right now I'm the one who was given the duty to take care of Torso."

"After seeing your slow investigation, don't you think that they're actually helping you?" Akira asked.

Shimoguchi frowned.

"How dare you say that!" he exclaimed.

"Senior Investigators Shimoguchi and Mado," Hirako suddenly said, "That's enough."

We all turned our heads to face Hirako.

"About Torso's case, I want the Shimoguchi squad and the Mado squad to take care of it together," Hirako continued, "Meanwhile, the Hirako squad will take care of Serpent. That's all for today's meeting."

I tried to hold back my laughter as I saw Shimoguchi's shocked face.

But he noticed it sooner than I thought.

"Is there something funny Rank 2 Investigator L/N?" Shimoguchi asked with a look that could kill.

I hurriedly cleared my throat.

"Not at all," I said as seriously as possible, "Anyways, I'm looking forward to work with your squad, Shimoguchi-san."

Akira sighed.
