Narrator's P.O.V
Imani is an introvert in high school. She doesn't fit in but she really doesn't mind it. She has only a few friends and they're the best. She doesn't think they know but they really help her when she needs it. Imani's past is something some people can relate to. One way or the other. In the 5th grade, she was showing signs of ADHD but her therapist didn't think much about it until she started middle school.
The signs showed up again and Imani started to realize it herself. So she was diagnosed with ADHD in the 7th grade. After a while of going on and off of her medication (since she didn't like taking the medication), it was hard to tell if the medication was actually helping. Imani was also on 2 other medications that helped with anxiety and depression so it wasn't just 1 pill she had to take every day. She stopped taking the medications and her life started getting harder. Her therapist didn't like all of the work her job continuously put on her and not a lot of pay so she found another job.
Imani was signing up for therapy again but they didn't accept her. The people said that she needed to have family therapy but that just wasn't going to work.
So now Imani is a freshman in high school really needing the medication but she isn't able to get on medication without an evaluation from her physician and she doesn't have anything to help her with the depression, anxiety, or ADHD. She also gets really bad mood swings and she tries to hide it but it doesn't work all of the time. So she always has her earbuds on and is always listening to music because it helps a little. But she can never get rid of her demons.
She was told not to have male friends but she has male friends. She hates herself for not listening but that is the only way she's able to get through life. She wanted a bigger brother when she was younger but that didn't happen. Instead, she is the oldest to three siblings she loves them but she also strongly dislikes them. So now that she is in high school she made some friends that are males that she really looks up to. But the thing is that they will be leaving soon. She has other friends but these two specific ones are what really has her happy.
She loves them. But she doesn't know what kind of love it is. She has never experienced this love before. So she struggles with her anxiety. She doesn't know if it is friendly love, sibling love, crush love, or caring love. She is scared to tell them. Even though she has given hints. She's scared she will creep them out. And then she won't have anybody.
They are what makes her wake up. When they look in her direction all of her stress, fear, anger, whatever emotion is inside of her just fades. They make her happy and she doesn't know what to do. She's a scared girl on the inside that can never show her true emotions because when she was younger she was told to never show your emotions it doesn't matter how good or bad they are. Hide them. And so when she develops emotions she gets scared. She gets scared that if she shows them they will make fun of her. She is a little girl on the inside but a young adult on the outside. She doesn't know how to let them out.
