Chapter 1

There was a loud crash as we opened the door and stepped in. Already you could smell the stench of sweat, alcohol and teenage hormones pervading the air. Glancing down to my black, sequined halter dress, I double-checked that it was falling perfectly to my curvy hips before turning to my new best friend, Farah. We had met last semester in basic math. Being new college students and horrible at math wasn’t a good combination. In hopes of coming together and passing the class, we sat next to each other every day after we saw that the other was struggling. Luckily, this worked out well so we decided to take the same math class the next semester to do the same. Help each other again. Beneficially, we were both elementary education majors consequently causing us to have a similar course load.

Having these things in common really brought us closer together. We both got jobs as baristas at the Café Lounge downtown, only a few minutes away from campus. It was fun working with Farah, we got to hang out and goof around while making money. What was better than that?

She was an amazing friend, not just to me, but to everybody. She was so kind and anyone that knew who she was loved her. Hell, I loved her. She wanted to help the world. Therefore, with her big, puppy, brown eyes she would offer assistance to anyone who needed advice or help. Whatever she could do for you, she would. This was why she was the good, counter-balance to me.

Not that I was a rebel or anything but while she saw the good in people and wanted to help everyone, I had a more cynical view of the world and just wanted to have a good time.

But even Angels needed a break sometimes so I brought Farah here, to her first college party. Finals were coming up soon and she had been busting herself studying and I thought what better way to relax than have a few drinks and get your flirt on with cute guys. Naturally, she was opposed to this being the ‘responsible one’.

“Audrey, I really don’t think this is a good idea. I mean, we have work in the morning.” Farah said stepping carefully over some beer bottles and following me as I strode into the house in search for the kitchen.

I stopped as we came to the arch at the end of the hall, “Look, I know that you are nervous about anything that can be considered ‘bad’ in the eyes of your parents but sometimes you just gotta forget about that and have a good time. It won’t kill you to once and a while have a drink or two.”

Sighing she walked past me into the kitchen. Following her in, I quickly scoped out the room. There were a few people around the island where piles of different drinks were laid out for the taking. Near the fridge were two guys, one who was pretty tall with dark, brown hair holding a beer bottle while the other, cuter guy with dirty blonde hair and muscles bulging from his shirt was laughing at something Mr. Tall said. As they walked off I made a mental note to flirt with Muscles later.

Focusing back on Farah, she had trailed over to the island, standing there with a frown on her face, looking over the variety of alcohol. Her posture and facial expression showed her hesitance and confusion. Deciding to give her one last push, I grabbed my own bottle of Heineken, twisted the cap off and took a swig before setting it down and leaning against the island next to her.

“I understand that you don’t want to be here. I get it. I just wanted to get out of the house, you know? My mom has been on the phone with lawyers all week and when she isn’t she has either been moping around the house or yelling at me. I didn’t want to deal with it anymore.” I took another long gulp of the beer and looked away.
