"I'm sorry."
The doctor apologized with slight hesitancy, looking down.
My heart stopped.
"Katie has unfortunately passed away. There was nothing we could do." I felt his cold, gloved hand lay itself gently on my shoulder. "Again, it's with great sorrow I notify this to you." His thumb rubbed softly im comfort as he turned away to leave. I stared straight ahead. Broken, salty tears beginning to trail their way down my cheeks.
Why Mom? It could have been anyone but her. My mind raced as I watched my reality crumble slowly before me. As someone grabbed my shoulder softly, I turned my head to get a glimpse at who it was. I looked up to see Dad, his face stained with the same empty tears. In that moment, I quickly took hold of him, hugging him close and breaking down. He returned the embrace caringly, warming the moment despite such a tragic and cold aura.
I wept in his arms, cried and gasped for air. I just couldn't believe it. She was gone, just like that. Ripped from my life without any warning.
