Pat, pat, pat, went my feet on the cold, concrete floors of the buildings. My face dripped with sweat, and my red hair was matted and dirty. My battlesuit was the only thing I had that didn't look like it had been through hell.
I looked down beside me to see Sparky, a dog, and my cat, Ashes. Ashes was on Sparky's back as he ran. Sparky looked up at me and barked. He was right. We were almost there.
I looked over at my best friend, Tobias. He was a tall boy, about my age, with dark mud colored hair. His complexion was a nice, light, olive color. His brown eyes looked over at me. He gave me a small smile and stretched out his hand. I smile and take his hand, Sparky running between us. We were almost to the exit. We were almost free. We were close to being home, where I would be with my mother, my father, my sister...
My sister...MY SISTER!!!!!
I stop dead in my tracks. My hand slips out of Tobias'. He and Sparky stop and look at me with confusion. They all come over to me, Tobias putting a hand on my shoulder.
"Athena, what's wrong?" he asks me.
"I don't know how I could forget..." I started, lifting Ashes off of Sparky's back. "...but I just remembered why we're here! Victoria! We have to help her!"
I try to run the other direction, but Tobias grabs my arm, and Sparky stands in front of me, whining.
"We don't have time! If you go to her now, you have a chance of being caught! We have no idea how many of Jane's goons are still on patrol! I can't lose you! Not again..."
I stand there silently for a second. Finally, I took a deep breath and pulled Tobias towards a door that led to a set of stairs, Sparky following close behind.
"Sit on the steps and wait for me, guys." I say, giving Ashes to Tobias. "I'm going to get Annabelle and Alex, then we can discuss what to do." Tobias opened his mouth to contradict, but did as he was told, Sparky and Ashes waving their paws at me.
I silently closed the door and ran down the hall. I reached the old elevator, which was thankfully empty. I opened the gate and slammed it shut behind me. I looked at the keypad and pressed the button labeled Floor 4. As soon as the elevator reached the fourth floor, I knew something wasn't right. There was frost on every part of the floor. I shivered as I followed the frost path. The path led to a cell, and in that cell...
"Annabelle! Alex!" I exclaimed. Two teens around my age with dark chocolate skin were sitting in the cell. The girl had long flowing black hair that reached halfway down her back. She was wearing a battlesuit like mine, but it had light blue accents instead of red. She also had black flats on her feet. The boy had black hair that barely reached the back of his neck. He was wearing a battlesuit, as well, but the accents on his were dark blue. They both looked in my direction with happy smiles on their faces.
"Athena!" Annabelle said, running up to the bars. "You're here?! But how?!"
"Sparky and Ashes came to our rescue." I said. "They're all waiting for us. We have to hurry!"
Annabelle nods as she shoots an ice beam at the lock. As soon as it freezes, I light a small flame on my index finger and shoot it at the lock. The lock thaws out and falls off instantly. I open the cage and tell my friends to run for the elevator. As soon as they get out, I shut the cage and run after them. My friends get into the elevator before me, and I slam the gate closed as soon as I step inside. I press the button Floor 1 and we make our way down.
I shushed my friends as we hit the bottom floor. I proceeded before them and told them to follow me. We managed to silently make our way to the stairway where Tobias was. As I gently pushed them inside, I heard voices coming from down the hall. That's when I saw her.
