Chapter 2

‘Lyra isn’t it? I heard a voice from the doorway say. I glanced up to see Carter leaning on the doorframe.

‘Yeah, Lyra,’ I said, nodding

‘May I?’ he asked waving his hand in the room

‘Sure,’ I swung my legs off the other side of the window seat and he sat down next to me.

‘Well I’m assuming you know how the Hunger Games work,’ I nodded ‘Then you must also know that it’s so much easier with even just one ally?’ I nodded again. ‘We should be allies,’ he stated

‘I just can’t, what will happen if we manage to finish and then we have to fight to the death, I couldn’t do that,’ I told him

‘You wouldn’t have to, I’ll kill myself,’ I just looked at him in shock.

‘I couldn’t let you do that,’

‘I’m helping you to stay alive Lyra; you have both parents and two siblings to go back to. I have nothing. Nobody will be sad if I don’t come back, I mean, the district will mourn for a little bit but they’ll all get over it. I won’t be remembered, just that boy in the 2nd Quarter Quell to everyone. But if you die, your family will never forget you,’ he told me

‘You shouldn’t do that for me,’ I told him

‘I plan on dying there anyway so it’s not like it will change anything for me, except maybe make me an actual friend before I go. But it gives you a better chance of surviving, if you just say yes,’

‘Okay then, we’ll stick together,’ I said and he hugged me tightly

‘You can be like my little sister,’ he said ‘C’mon now, let’s go eat and check out our competition,’

Gianna knocked lightly on the door.

‘Lyra honey, suppertime! Have you seen Carte – oh, hello there, I just went to your room to get you,’ she babbled.

‘Let’s go sweetheart,’ Carter said, wrapping an arm around my waist as we walked down. Originally we were supposed to be sat on opposite sides of the table but Carter insisted on moving. Then Draco asked the question I think everyone was wondering.

‘Are you together?’ We glanced at each other and burst out laughing.

‘No, no, no,’ I shook my head and Carter continued for me.

‘We’re just friends,’ he told them before we got distracted by the food.

I was used to two or three courses on a special occasion but not the five that came with supper on Tribute Train. We started with spring chicken soup followed by a green salad. Then the main was turkey and fried potatoes along with onions the size of peas. This was followed by a selection of breads, cheeses and fruit and finally a rich chocolate mousse with berries. By the end of the meal I was full to bursting and Carter looked like he was as well but we were instantly shooed in the living compartment to watch the other reapings. It started with 1 where a pretty but deadly looking blonde girl called Alexandrie was chosen and a small 12 year old boy were chosen but an 18 year old boy, most likely Alexandrie's brother due to the last name, volunteered. Then in 2 a tough looking tanned girl was selected along with a boy who instantly caught my attention. Mason Coral. It quickly skipped to 3. The girl was another blonde, called Victoria and the boy just the usual from the Technology district. From 4, the final Career district, came a younger looking red headed girl with many freckles and a bronze haired guy. The girl from 5 stood out as a strong one, she was called Caitleanne Cyrus. The boy seemed like he wouldn't last against the Careers though. Then came us in 6 followed by a slight girl in 7 and tall, tanned boy. In 8 Katiey-May stood out, a cute girl who looked like she had some serious fight in her. 9 and 10 were also unimpressive but in 11 the tall and broad shouldered boy with his dark skin stood out mainly for looking like a human mountain but so did the girl. Emmalyn Smyth. Unlike most of 11, she was pale with blonde-reddish hair. Finally was 12, the boy had dark curly hair and olive skin but the girl was pale and blonde. It seemed there was a lot of competition this year.

‘Well some look tough but we can beat them,’ Carter whispered into my ear and I nodded slowly.

‘So when we get to the training centre you’ll be at the mercy of your prep team and stylists and speaking from experience the Remake Centre will hurt but it’s worth it. You’re both good looking kids this year so you should get sponsors anyway,’ Draco told us.

‘Ooh yes! Hopefully these new stylists, brother and sister, will be more creative. Lenia and Kaevin were good but they always did a boring mode of transport like a cart or train,’ Gianna sighed. ‘It would be such a shame if you end up as a wagon, waste of these wonderful features,’ I will admit I blushed slightly; I was not used to getting compliments. ‘But enough talk on your stylists, we’ll arrive tomorrow and the opening ceremony is in the evening so we want you to look your best. No dark shadows or puffy eyes, right? Off to your cabins now,’ she commanded, shooing us out the compartment.

Carter walked back to our chambers with me. They were opposite each other on the same corridor.

‘Well I guess I’ll see you in the morning?’ I said and he nodded before leaning in to hug me.

‘Night…sis,’ he smiled and I grinned back, closing the door behind me. I quickly stripped off my reaping clothes and searched in drawers for something to wear. The top drawers contained underwear and then nightgowns in the one below. The rest of the drawers and the wardrobe held a number of outfits even though we would only need two outfits at most and something to sleep in. I grabbed a part of shorts and a silky top then climbed into bed after changing.

I laid there for a while, staring at the ceiling while my mind wandered. I thought about my family, probably trying to stay positive about this, convincing Tauri and Kaitos that I’d be back, maybe succeeding. I tried it myself but it worked better to just keep my mind off the games full stop. I heard a light tap on my door and I climbed out of bed and opened it. Stood outside yet again was Carter. I guess it would be annoying to most people but not to me. He was growing on me, just like he was my big brother.

‘Hey,’ I said

‘Ssh, we don’t want to wake Gianna and Draco,’ he whispered.

‘Come in then,’ I laughed quietly and he followed me in, closing the door behind him.

‘So what brings you here?’ I asked him.

‘I don’t really know, I just wanted to check on you,’ he shrugged

‘Well I’m fine,’ I said, smiling to convince him.

‘No you aren’t. In case you didn’t know, Lyra, when you cry I can see your tears,’ he winked. I lifted a hand to my eye and wiped it. Sure enough it came away wet. I hadn’t even noticed I was crying.

‘So what’s wrong darling?’ he asked

‘I’ve just been thinking about my family and how they must feel,’

‘Do you want to talk about it?’ he looked at me and I shook my head ‘Okay but think about it like this. They’ll feel better if you settle down and get some sleep so you can look even more beautiful and we’ll rake in more sponsors. And everyone knows more sponsors means a better chance of surviving,’ And weirdly that made me feel better.

He stood up to leave as I climbing into bed but I grabbed his wrist before he could leave.

‘Stay with me?’ I said quietly, sounding so vulnerable.

‘Of course,’ he told me. I patted the space next to me in the bed and he hesitantly laid down next to me. I curled up to sleep and he reached out and put an arm around me, hugging me. Smiling I fell asleep feeling safer and happier than I had all day.
