chapter 1 ~ the start of the beginning pt.1

Ember

We all know the world will soon meet its end, but we never thought it to be this decade... in 1845.

'Today is a new day' I think to myself. I jump as my little sister Blair runs into my room telling me to get dressed faster so we can get to school as early as possible. I take a quick glance at my schedule for today and try to memorise it as fast as I can, I put on my bonnet and get my lunch on my way out the door. I stop outside of my cottage and notice someone walking towards me. "Ash!" I exclaim, he finally gets to me and I wrap my arms around him. 'I'm finally in the arms of someone who makes me feel safe' I think as we begin to pull away from the hug. "Shall we?" he asks, putting his arm out. "We shall" I reply, looping my arm with his.

On our way to school, he picks a flower off of a nearby bush and hands it to me. "For you, My Lady," he hands it to me with a smile on his handsome face.
"Why thank you" I reply, kissing him sweetly on the cheek.

We finally make it to school, and we walk in, tied to each other, people in the halls stare at us as we walk past them. He walks me to my mathematics room and finally speaks, "I think we should break up," I close the door to the room and unwillingly drag him to the nearest lavatory. "What?!" I scream, feeling like I want to pull my hair out.
"Yep, I'm breaking up with you," he says confidently with his hands in his pockets and I fall to the floor sobbing.

Suddenly, an ear-piercing alarm sets off, alerting everyone there is a fire in the school. I quickly pick myself up off of the floor and run through the school hallways and push my way through the door to see no one at the place we were to meet if a fire were to start. There is no one. No people. I turn to make my way back into the school and see nothing and once I turn back around there is nothing around except for a building in the distance.

I look down, confused as to why everything has disappeared. I see something in the ground, something glowing. I bend down to pick it up so I can get a closer look at it. It's a small scroll sitting on top of the dirt ground, I pick it up and read its tiny writing. It reads: 'Ember of 1845, you must journey to the building you shall see in the distance, you will take the shard of the sun with you in the sun ring, then, when you get there, a surprise awaits you...' I look down again and the glow isn't a glow anymore, it's like the light of the sun. I touch it and it burns my finger, I try to pick it up again and I am able to hold it without it burning a hole through my hand. The 'sun ring' sits beneath the 'shard of the sun'.

I must do this, I put the sun shard in the ring and slip the ring onto my finger. The journey begins.

Whilst walking, the ring and shard begin to glow a blue/purple colour. Then, two people I've never seen before appear beside me. We all stop abruptly. "Woah..." the boy to my left says, looking me up and down. "Who are you?" he asks, looking at the girl to my right and back to me. "Me?" I question, pointing to myself.
"Uh, yeah,"
"Well, I am Ember Patton. And you are?" I ask, holding my hand out for him to kiss.
"Bluewater, Bailey Bluewater. But my friends call me Bay. You, can call me Bay," he says taking my hand in his, shaking it. We both look at the other girl who had stayed quiet the whole time. "What's your name?" I ask simply
"I-I'm Luna C-cresent," she says, nervously,

"Uh, if you don't mind me asking. What are you guys wearing? You guys look ridiculous," Bail- Bay says.
