Its terrifying how death can occur in the blink of an eye, drop of a hat, in a heartbeat. Death is silent and like a predator hunting after prey. It's unpredictable like a wild animal and the most terrifying thing when it suddenly picks you to capture. I was at school when I was called to the office.
Earlier that day...
The day started out like every other day. Nothing was out of place that would give me an indicator that the cruel thing we call death was about to wrap its claws around my family.
"Jane if you don't hurry we're going to be late", my mother had called from the stairs.
I looked around my completely cluttered room looking for my headphones and bag. I couldn't seem to remember where I had put them.
"I'm coming, hold on", I called back.
I finally found both as I pushed away discarded clothes from the chair that sat by my window.I hurried and made my way down the stairs and found both waiting at the bottom.
"Took you long enough", my dad said with an annoyed sigh."You know we have to be at work at 7:30".
"sorry I couldn't find my headphones and we both know I can be very annoying without them." Sometimes I feel like my parents don't understand me and the way I like to live life. I had also been told many times, that I talk to much, but I really can't help the fact that I do.
We all started towards the car and got in. I was sitting in the back and I went to put my headphones on when my mom called my name. I look toward the passenger seat and saw my mom look at me with an annoyed look on her face. The words that came from her mouth shocked me.
"You know you should show me and your father some respect, you know how much we work and that we can't be late". I looked at her with a shocked look on my face. Is she serious? I do more work then both of them combined. When I get home from school, I clean and I do the laundry. Heck, I even cook all the meals. I bearly have time to do my homework. I even have a part-time job as a waitress and they make me give them all the money I get when I'm paid.
I opened my mouth to reply and before I could reply I am cut off. "Don't say a word or ill ground you". I closed my mouth and turned to stare out the window. I don't dare look at my parents until we arrived 2 blocks from my school. I look toward my parents confused.
"Get out here we don't have time to drop you off," my mother said with an almost wicked smile
I hastily made my way out the car and started toward my school. I grabbed my phone and looked at the time. Looks like I'll be late again. I stuffed it in my pocket and ran the rest off the way to school. At the entrance, I was met by my best friend, Sophia Carter. As I made my way to her as she was talking to Jake Bensen the boy my best friend seemed to never stop talking about.
I clear my throat and they both look at me with a look I couldn't quite place. Well then sorry I interrupted I think to myself.
Sophia forced a smile onto her face and spoke, "well well look who is late again."
"Sorry, you know how my parents are," I told her.
We walk in and hear the bell ring signaling that class had just started and how late I made us both. We part ways going to our lockers and grab our stuff for first period chem class. I had made it to the class before Sophia and walk in. I hated being late and having everyone stare at me for walking in. Mr.Smith turned and looked at me a soon as I opened the door. He gave a look before writing me a detention slip and said: "This is your forth late this week."
I sighed and went to my seat, how I was supposed to have after-school detention and do all the chores before my parents got home. Right as I sat down Sophia came in with swollen lips and messed up hair. I locked eyes with her and she smirked. I knew what this look meant, and judging by the state she was in so did everyone else.
She got her own detention slip and sat down two rows in front of me.
...Thirty minutes later...
I was writing notes down when one of the female secretaries knocked on the door. Mr.Smith went over and talked to her. I saw him looked back to me with almost seemed like sadness. "Miss Evans, you are needed in the office." I got up collecting my things in confusion. I walked out of the room and a police officer and the secretary was waiting for me. I immediately knew something was wrong.
The police officer then told me what had happened. I could not understand what else was said but the words, parents..car accident...and dead.
The world began to seem out of focus and all I remember is seeing the ceiling lights in the hallway, then nothing at all.
Beep..Beep...Beep...
I woke up in a what seemed to be a completely white room only later to find out, my eyes couldn't handle the light. When my eyes adjusted to the light, I saw a doctor and two familiar people. Yet I couldn't seem to place them in my memory. I shifted uncomfortably and all pairs of eyes flicked over to me. All three came over to me and the doctor was the first to speak.
"How are you feeling? and pain?", I shook my head and realized my head now had a dull ach.
"When you fainted you hit your head." He said.
I then realized my parents and spoke.
"My parents..." I now realize just how weak my voice was.
