Chapter 6 - Double Take Part II
An unknown guy strolled towards us. I choked on my drink and my eyes bulged out of eyes as he plopped himself down to the spare seat beside me. "Sorry I'm late." He smiled.
His hair was a mop of honey brown untamed curls, his daring hazel eyes glistened through the reflection of the crystal chandelier above. The air around us consisted of utter complete and awkward silence. Until the sound of Austin's cough gladly broke it.
"um hey. I'm Jake." His hands were stranded in the air between us, waiting for me to close the space. "I'm Rachel." I smiled and shook his hand.
Silence began again. Facepalm/10
The savoury scent of cheesy lasagne hovered my taste buds as it was placed on my table. My stomach started grumbling loudly so I dug in, with no care whoever was watching me. I just wanted the food.
*
"You wanna get out of here?" Jake asked with gleaming eyes. I nodded desperately. Farah and Austin have been sending googly eyes so much that I think they both can flirt up a storm.
Although Jake is not the first person I would usually choose to go on an adventure with, I can't take anymore of this 'love' in the air. It was gonna make me choke up my delicious lasagne. I don't want that.
Me and Jake carefully slid out of out seats, being cautious not to make the love birds notice us. But they wouldn't even notice us, I don't think they'll mind that we give them alone time anyway. This means, they're paying for the bill. Cha-Ching!
Golden fairy lights were strung around every tree, which provided us with light and relaxation. Don't fairy lights give everyone that feeling?
"Soo.. Where to now?" He kicked a little pebble out of his way and into a bush. "What about the park?" I pointed to the little empty playground sitting above full-grown grass across the street.
He didn't answer but he smiled and walked with me. We both sat on the pair of swings swaying lightly.
"Let's play 21 questions." I nodded continuously. "Okayy.." He swung lightly, in thought of a question. "What's you're favourite colour?" He finally asked.
"Red. Definitely red." I answered. He gave me a nod of satisfaction. Jake had a quite charming British accent that made me focus in how he sounded rather than what he was actually saying.
"It's my turn.. Books or Movies?" I asked.
"Books." My head snapped up in surprise. "Seriously?" His eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "I just thought guys like you would never lay a finger on a book."
His eyes looked at me in amusement. "Guys like me? What do you mean by that." I gulped. I should've never told him that.
"Um.. Like you kno- I mean.. You're gorgeo-" I shut my mouth up as a smirked placed his smile. He stood up from his seat and walked in front of me. "So I'm gorgeous?" He winked. I rolled my eyes and joked, "Not as gorgeous as "".
This wipes his smirk off his face and I mentally congratulate myself for the little victory. His face was priceless as he realises that I will not be drooling over him like every other girl here.
He went back to his seat in silence and continued our game. "Favourite artist?" I asked. "Ed Sheeran." He blurted out. His eyes gleamed with excitement. "You like him too?!" We both gasped at the same time. "Who doesn't anyway?" I laughed.
We continued the game until it struck 9:30 pm. We unfortunately decided to go back to the restaurant in case they need us. I doubt it though.
Pain shot from my feet as I started walking through the rocky path towards the restaurant. Stupid heels. I strapped them off and left hem dangling from my fingers.
Tonight's night summer breeze was colder than usual. Lucky I brought a knitted pitch black cardigan in my purse for these kind of emergencies. Since the air was cold, that meant the cemented path was absolutely freezing.
Jake looked at me with an amusing smile plastered on his face. "I don't get it. If it hurts. Why do girls wear it?"
My head was nuzzled into thought for a moment. "I don't know. I guess when girls wear it, they feel splendid and powerful. You know? I guess wearing them makes them feel more confident, more mature. It's sexism at its best. Most guys think that girls are just there for 'entertainment' but I guess girls wearing heels means they can endure pain like men, even if it's for the girliest reasons."
Jake started clapping as he stared at me in admiration. "DAMN GIRL." I beamed a humble smile and curtseyed.
"Or you can just say it looks pretty?" Both our heads snapped to the direction from where the voice came from. Only to find Farah's arms clinging against Austin's.
"Shut up. I'm trying to make girls sound awesome" I grumbled. We all looked at each other and started laughing.
I felt my phone vibrate from my purse signaling a message.
Carter: hey sexxay ;) long time no talk I see.
I mentally banged my head onto a brick wall. Not him again!
