"Phoebe, what are you doing? We need to hurry if we're planning to be on time!"
"Okay, coming." I look in the mirror one last time. My natural, dark red/brown waves looked more wavy today. And my green eyes looked lighter, as if today was going to be a good day.
They lied.
"About fucking time! You're slower than a turtle." My sister, Ivy, complains as she pushes past me and into the bathroom.
She and I look very alike. Tan skin, thin, red hair, green eyes. The main differences between us are she's a year older and she has dimples. Her hair is also more brown than mine and she has gold flecks in her eyes.
"Slow and steady wins the race." I say to her as she shuts the door and I walk to my room.
When I get there I shut the door and prepare to get dressed. I decided on my denim ripped jeans, a long sleeved, black shirt and my all black Huaraches. Actually, scratch the black shirt. A hoodie feels better. I then put on mascara, perfume, my chain and my watch.
"You ready?" I hear Ivy yell. I quickly grabbed my bag, phone and headphones before darting out of the house and to Ivy's car.
We made it to school. A new school. The third school we've been to in two years. Where we hope we get to stay until we both graduate and move away.
"Now look, I know you're completely obsessed with me and all, but we don't know each other. Got your pocket knife?" Ivy asks me after giving me the same 'inspirational' speech she gives me at every new school.
"Yes mom!" I roll my eyes as I grab my bag and rushed out of her car. She parked all the way at the end because there were no spots closer to the school. So that meant I had to walk.
West High School, (Home of The Cowboys!), was centered in a not-so-great neighborhood on the West Side of Columbus. As in Columbus, Ohio. The school itself looks old and run down, and the staff the same.
Walking into the school was easy because people around here are cool. If you don't fuck with them, they don't fuck with you. Simple. Any other school I've been to, people are complete pricks. But here, the people are different. At least most.
"Lookie here, it's a new girl. Better watch who you fuck with around here. Wouldn't wanna end up with a bullet in between ya eyes." Some girl points to her forehead and the girl next to her grins. They were leaning against the wall next to the entrance, probably where they taunt whoever they can.
The main girl is skinny, but thick in the right places. The other girl too. The main chick has long, straight black hair with fiery blue tips. Her lips are plump and all glossed up and she has a nose ring. Her skin is a beautiful, smooth brown and I could smell the vanilla lotion from five feet away. The other girl just the same, except her hair has pink and it's curlier. But they both have really hazel eyes with a hint of green in the middle. They look so much alike that there's no doubt they're related.
"You got jokes." I tell her as I continue walking. A few seconds later I feel a presence next to me, which happened to be the girls.
"What's your schedule?" The main one has her hand out so I hand my schedule to her. She looks it over and goes 'hmm' after a couple seconds.
"What?" I ask her and she hands it back to me.
"They put you with all the hood rats. But don't worry, my brother Julian is in your classes. He's pretty chill, unlike the rest of em." She tells me as they take me to my first period.
"What's your guys' name?" I ask them and they both answer one at a time.
"My name's Kai." The main girl answers first.
"My name's Kendra." The other girl responds.
"I'm Phoebe." I tell them.
"Look Phoebe, you can sit with us at lunch. We're kinda hard to miss, so you'll see us when you get there. And don't start no trouble. People around here are immature as fuck. Here's your class." She points to the room and keeps walking with Kendra.
"Thank you." I say, but she's too far away to hear it.
I walk into the class and immediately I am met with a tall, light skin guy. He looks to be about six foot, sculpted as fuck and he has hazel/green eyes, kinda like Kai and Kendra. But his seem more green than hazel. His lips are plump, he has a little bit of fuzz on his top lip and a sharp jawline. His eyebrows are kinda arched and his hair is dark brown, short, and curly. This is Julian.
"Sorry, am I in your way." He asks and his voice is perfect.
"Yeah kinda." Is all I say. All I fucking say. 'YeAh kInDa'. I'm such a loser.
"My bad shorty." He moves to the side and motions for me to walk in and I do. He puts his hand on my lower back and guides me to the teacher's desk.
"Yo Snider, new student." His hand leaves my back and he leans on the desk in front of me, facing me. "I'm Julian. What's your name Babygirl."
"Phoebe, and I'm not your 'Babygirl'." I tell him, even though I like how smooth and effortless he is.
"Alright Big Head, calm down. Where you from, Phoebe?" He bites his bottom lip and waits for an answer.
"I'm from here." I tell him.
He raises an eyebrow, confused. "I ain't ever seen you before for you to be from 'here'."
"I moved to my aunts house in Cali before I started middle school." Then before freshman year ended, my aunt died and I ended up with my Dad and Ivy again. And Dad, Ivy and I have moved numerous times before coming here. But I didn't say that.
"Cali is a nice place to be, if you know where you're going." Julian replies, looking into my soul.
"Julian, take a seat. Where's your schedule young lady?" The teacher, Mrs. Snider, asks me. She's an older woman, late fourties', with black pin straight hair and cat eye framed glasses. She has icy blue eyes and her eyebrows are drawn on very thin. I hand her my schedule and she points to a desk in front of her desk. "You can sit there."
I move to my seat and she places my schedule on the desk as the first bell rings. I look around the room and see a few people here already. A couple of weird anime kids in the left corner of the room, some guy in the back with headphones on and some girls talking in the middle of the room. Julian wasn't in here anymore.
A few more kids come in, followed by Julian and three other guys. The guys look rough. Not rough as in they didn't have decent clothing or anything like that. But rough as in they were scary and not my kind of people. Julian looks at me and winks, making me roll my eyes and I turn my head to the front of the room. They sit in the back next to the guy with the headphones as Mrs. Snider starts talking.
"If you all haven't noticed we have a new student. Phoebe Tacket. Say hi to her as you take out your textbooks and turn to page 143." She says just as the announcements come on.
I look under my desk and see there's no book in the metal rack. I raise my hand to ask Mrs. Snider for one but as I do so, a book is placed on my desk. I look up and see Julian walking back to his desk with the scary looking people.
Opening the book and flipping to the page was a trip. So many people have used these books and they've written so much shit it's hilarious. When I got to the page number, there was a piece of paper with a note on it. It said 'hi'.
I turned in my seat to see Julian looking at me, smiling that cute ass smile.
I smile in return and turn back towards the front of the room. Today is going to be an adventure.
