I glance over the options. Water, sparkling water, iced tea, soda, juice, anything I could possibly think of for a drink was there. This made it all the harder to choose though! Finally I decided on some seltzer, flavored like black raspberry, my favorite kind. I hurry to the counter and gladly pay for my drink, only receiving a few words from the employee. Once that was out of the way, I headed out of the shop and into the street. A soft sprinkle of rain dusts me, cooling my skin. Using all my strength, I broke the seal of the cap. I could feel the cap's texture indent my finger. The cap came off and I held it in my right while taking a long sip with my left. I continued walking so I wouldn't be late to getting to my friend's house. Suddenly I bumped into something, or someone- and felt cold seltzer come splashing down onto me.
"Oh my gosh..!" I stepped back and looked down at my partially soaked shirt. I then quickly diverted my gaze up and my eyes locked with two red ones. They quickly filled with annoyance and I rubbed my arm. "Sorry." The tall, aggravated blonde didn't seem to register my words. "Watch where you're going, loser! I'll kick your ass!" My eyes widen and I look down at the ground, feeling uneasy. It's not like he even got wet, why is he so mad? "Right. Sorry." I hurry away, screwing the cap back onto the bottle of shaken seltzer, which fizzes at the top.
"Hey! Honeybee!" I smile as I look up towards the sky. Luckily, my eyes don't meet with the sun and burn up, instead they are shielded with shade provided by a large wooden treehouse. Luckily, the rain stopped a few minutes ago, so the sky was almost entirely clear now, a pretty shade of blue rather than grey. I latch onto the rope latter and start to climb up, u settled by how it tilts under my weight. I trust it though, since my friends and I have been up it about a hundred times. "What's up?" I hoist myself onto the floor and look up, only to see another guest. I almost fall out of the treehouse on accident, just because of how surprised I am. The mystery person sees my stumble and quickly reaches out, grabs my hand, and grounds me.
I lean back into the treehouse and waddle inside, as to not make the same mistake. "Ha, thanks." I smile at the boy, who smiles back. I then tilt towards Yukiko, who smiles at the boy also. "Yukiko, who's this?" I ask, a lump of blonde hair falling into my line of vision. "That's Denki Kaminari. He went to our middle school, remember?" She reminds me. I gasp, my mouth forming an o shape. "He looks... different." Yukiko laughs and looks over Kaminari, who is currently immersed in one of Yukiko's many toys, this one being an etch-a-sketch. "Hotter, right?" I snort at the comment, and he glances at us. "Yukiko, you little..." I sigh, secretly agreeing her statement. Denki used to be a flimsy stick of a boy, but he actually looks like a regular person now.
"Might I ask, who are you?" Kaminari leans closer to me and inspects me, and I blush and back away a bit. "Oh! Honeybee, is that you?!" His eyes light up and I nod. All my life, people have only known me as Honeybee. Only a very select few people know my real name. I can count them on one hand! My guardian, who happens to be pro hero Mandalay, my close friend Hideko, and Yukiko. "I missed you this summer!" I exclaim. He agrees and starts going on about what he did. Denki and I have always been friends. Not too close, but still good friends. "So, Honeybee, what high school are you applying to?" My ears perk up at the question. "Oh, good question! I'm actually going to UA!" Kaminari' eyes twinkle. "Really?! Me too!" I laugh in surprise. "Yukiko, you're thinking of going too, right?" I turn to the pink-haired girl beside me. "Mhm!" She smiles, her pale cheeks lifting, as they tend to do when she smiles. "Cool! I hope we all get in!"
"So, are you excited for the exam, Honeybee?" Yukiko asks, scratching the bridge of her nose. I blush and look down. "Well, actually, I'm not taking it." Kaminari tilts his head in confusion. "So... you're not going?" I shake my head quickly, blonde hair flying with it. "You see, I got in on recommendations!" "Woah, cool! Your mom did that, right? Recommended you?" He asks excitedly. "Yep, Mandalay." I feel bad, but I can't come to call Mandalay my mom. My real mom must be out there somewhere still, I know she is. I just haven't found her yet.
"Well, good luck on your exams if I don't see you before! Bye!" I wave to the two as I crawl back down the latter carefully. I hope they get in, I don't want to attend high school all alone. Since Hideko is quirkless, she didn't bother applying. I tried to tell her that UA started accepting quirkless people, but she didn't exactly want to go either. I just hope she's happy with whatever she does do!
"What's up, Honeybee?" Mandalay asks, stirring her tea with a silver spoon. "Not much. I went over to Yukiko's place, and Denki Kaminari was there. Remember him?" I take a seat across from her at the island of our kitchen. "Yeah. You guys would be a cute couple, you know." She comments nonchalantly, taking a loud sip. I gawk at her, then sigh and shake my head. "You can't just say that about any guy I meet, you know." She scoffs. "Hey, you need a boyfriend young lady! You're starting high school and you've never had so much as a crush."
Suddenly our dog, Mochi, comes dashing into the room, skidding on the floor and sliding halfway across the room. I stifle a laugh at the clumsy alaskan malamute. "Come here Mochi!" The dog trots over proudly and sits by my foot of my stool. I pat his head and he points his snoot up to give my fingers a small kiss. I smile at the obedient good boy. "Mochi, do you want a treat?"
That night, I lay in bed, wearing my silk pajama set. My light illuminates the room, but not very brightly. It's good for nighttime, soft on the eyes. Suddenly my phones buzzes. I let my head fall to the side and lazily reach an arm out, grabbing the device. I hold it high above my head and move to turn it on, but not before it slips diagonally and falls in the center of my forehead. "Ack!" I exclaim, picking it up and rubbing the spot where it hit. I proceed to turn it on this time, and see a message from a childhood friend of mine, Tsu.
Heard your going to UA? I smile and my thumbs begin to type, as if they're programmed to do so. Well, they kind of are. yep! recommendations, what would we do without them! A typing bubble appears, the three dots inside floating as if they were bobbing in water. Cool. I'm going to try and get in too, so perhaps I'll see you there. That would make three of my friends going to UA! Or at least trying to go. cool! i'm rooting for you! The bubble reappears shortly after my message is sent. I'm going to bed now, you should too. You need to get more sleep, by the way. Night night, Honeybee. 🐸 I quickly check the time. 10:54. I laugh under my breath. alright, fine. goodnight, tsu!
