1 - walking down 29th and park

He pulled the jacket closer around his torso in an attempt to shield himself from the cold wisps of autumn air that bit into his skin as he walked down the streets of New York City.

He had walked around the same few blocks a few times to try and kill some time because he was early for his date. He didn't want to arrive so early so that he gave the impression that he was too eager... or too desperate, though the latter wasn't so far from the truth.

He craved for human affection and he missed the pride in saying that he had a girlfriend. It made him, at least in his eyes, more worthy as a man.

Today was just like any other day and he was making his way down the long string of blind dates he had set up for himself. They were all at the same place, same time, and same day of the week. The unfailing regularity of a date at the coffee shop on Park Avenue had become so ingrained into his schedule for the past 7 months now, that he was sure that if he didn't see "Coffee Date" in the Tuesday column of his organizer, the world as he knew it would turn upside down.

It's not that he wanted to go on a date with a new girl every week, as if he were a soon-to-be bride sampling many different cakes in one sitting. In fact, he usually had an undeniably enjoyable time with most all the girls. But they were never what he was looking for. He never felt any sort of spark with them, their smiles, as pretty as they were, failed to make his heart stop, and their eyes mirrored the look in his own: desperation and loneliness.

Stopping at a crosswalk, he finally lifted his head to scan the area around him. Though he was on his way to his, perhaps hundredth date or more, he didn't resent the first girl for leaving him.

Between the two of them, the reasons and the truth of what had happened was in no smoke and mirrors. He knew exactly why she left him inside of the apartment, kneeling just behind the front door as it slammed behind her. And as painful as it was watching her go, the larger part of him understood her; any person would.

But it didn't change the fact that she had ruined everyone else for him.
