Not So Many Fish in the Sea

We played with joy in the shallows

Frolicked in tidal pools.

With glittering sand and water

A playground for my school.

Some people splashed into the waves

A perfect day had begun.

We weaved and darted through their legs

All children having fun.

The children were gone in a splash

Why had they been upset?

My brothers, sisters had panicked

Eyes searching for a threat.

Not danger but food rained down

And with it shared relief.

Clam meat, worms and escaping prawns

We were going to have a feast!

I snagged a big piece of clam

I wasn't going to share.

Shocked, I was rewarded with pain

And a flight through the air.

A hairy hand grabbed my middle

Eyes examined his prize.

Rudely shoved me in a bucket

Though I was undersized.

As the world slowly disappeared

More fish were caught I'll bet.

Not many more fish in the sea

At least it wasn't nets.
