Under this Plastic Sea

I swam through the soupy mess of rubbish, pieces getting caught in my long hair, scratching at my skin, at my tail, floating their way into my eyes like a vicious shark. Longer pieces attached themselves to my arms, causing me to lose my sense of direction. Why oh why had they allowed this to happen? Had they no self regard for the creatures living in our oceans? For the environment? Had they no respect for themselves or their health? I swam desperately for the surface, disobeying the biggest law of my people; never go above the waves. Do not let them know we exist. But it was too late.
My head broke the surface, pieces of plastic sticking themselves to my hair. I saw the ocean before me and I let out a strangled sob. Before me was a floating carpet of rubbish and devastation, I turned around, desperately seeking the end of it. But it was no use. Ahead of me, a lone dolphin squealed and bucked, trying to rid itself of the plastic straw stuck in its eye.
"Hold on!" I called, swimming as best I could to it.
Upon reaching the poor creature, I saw just how bad it truly was.
The straw sticking out of its eye was not the only problem. A plastic net had weaved itself around the tail of the mighty animal, there was a drinks lid up its nose. And by her side, was a dead calf, with one of those plastic figure of eight things for beer wrapped around its snout.
I reached for it, stroking it softly and pulling it off, adding yet another piece to an already polluted ocean.
All of a sudden, there was a loud beep and a shout.
"Oi oi lads! There's another ane!" Shouted a voice.
I turned and saw a boat with strange equipment and humans on it. A human! A real life human!
This was my chance! I could finally tell them to stop what they were doing and get rid of their rubbish! I could be a hero!
"Oi! Lass what're ye daein in this muck!?" One of the humans shouted. They were slim with strange coral pieces instead of a tail covered in more strange things.
I thought to myself before putting my shoulders back and telling "I am ridding my home of the destruction YOU have caused!"
The human looked taken aback. "Your home? What are you, a mermaid? We all know mermaids aren't real." They scoffed.
"I am as real as this mess. Now clean it up immediately." I barked.
They placed their hand upon their chest. "That's what we're here to do. We want our oceans back. But we need help." Replied the human.
I nodded before disappearing home and telling everyone to help the humans fix their mess. People were against the idea at first but now, we've removed more than ten tonnes of plastic from our oceans and I even became the ambassador to humans.
