Her heart hurt. That was all she knew.

Like a flower wilting in her chest. Her head throbbed. It hurt.

She breathed in deeply, taking a stabilizing breath. It trapped itself in her lungs. Her heartbeat echoed in her ears, in time with the throbbing of her head.

There was a nobles' council meeting that night. She knew already that she would not be attending.

Her fingers twitched. She clamped them around the small pendant hanging from her neck.

The ticking of the clock on her mantel seemed to grow louder with each passing second. She'd meant to get up and go over to her desk to get some paperwork done an hour ago. She still hadn't.

It seemed the most monumental feat to be able to move.

And she was tired...gods, she was so tired...

Pressing the heel of her hand into her eyes, she took another breath. There was a small shelf of books in the nook where she sat. Still she could not find the desire nor the energy to so much as raise her arm to grab one and read.

It all seemed so...meaningless.

And yet, why did she still care so much?
