Prologue

I kneeled down, looking at the cute and small toy that sat in front of me. He was sitting by himself on an empty shelf. There were no tags and he wasn't packaged. The demon plush had a constant smile and that 1920's aesthetic that I had fallen in love with due to the cartoons I watched as a small child.

Slowly, I reached out and picked the plush up. He was soft and light, the fabric was a short black fluff and he had a white face, bow, and gloves. A broad black stitched toothy smile and Pac-man eyes were on his face.

"You're just a little devil, huh?" I asked and held his small, gloved hand in my own for a moment. With a sigh and a smile, I decided to take the toy to the checkout with me. I could feel my mother looking over at him in suspicion.

After she went to buy her things, I turned to a nearby worker. "Excuse me?"

She turned to me with a smile that became forced when she saw the toy I held to my chest. "Yes?"

"There are no price tags on this. How much is it?" I asked, my head lightly tilted.

She chuckled softly. "Just take it. I didn't know one was still on the shelf. Most of them were taken off because of a recall. The stitches weren't sewn right and they break easily."

I smiled and hugged the plush to my chest, turning to my mom and walking outside with her. We got in our car, a silver Impala, and sat down. I pulled the buckle over my monochrome striped sweater and pulled the toy to my chest.

My mom got in the driver's side and pulled her brown and caramel dyed hair into a ponytail. She didn't put her buckle on normally, but she did this time with a side glance to the toy I had. After starting the car, she began to drive.

The toy sat in my lap, facing out the front window like I was. I took my phone out of my pocket and checked my notifications. Thomas Sanders added to their story. DrawingJav messaged you on Discord. P@nd@noia left the group Panda's Ecchi Class.

I felt my heart twist as I read that my friend left our group. I put my phone down and hugged the toy, setting him down in my lap and holding his small hand in my own again. The motion was a comfort on its own and made me feel like I wasn't alone; like someone was with me.

"Aren't you a little old to be getting toys?" My mom asked, not turning to look at me. "You're 15 and you're still buying toys."

"He was the only one left. He looked lonely."

"'He' is a toy, Raven!" she yelled at me. I moved back in my seat before holding him to my chest and plugging in my headphones.

I held his hand still, staring out the window as trees and houses flew past the window. We didn't live in town. In fact, we lived quite far out of town. I didn't live with my mom, though. I lived with my dad, which we had just passed his house on the way back to my mom's. A burst of heartbreak coursed through my body as the lively song ended. There were a few moments of silence.

A small smile cracked at my lips as this song began to play. Its dark lyrics gave a euphoric and happy adrenaline boost. I gently hugged my toy again, his constant smile reminding me to do the same. Maybe he wasn't a bad thing like everyone seemed to believe him to be.

The dreadful lyrics of this one song were what we pulled up to the house to. My stomach tightened and I held the soft plush closer to my chest. I gathered the bags at my feet and walked to the house, unlocking it by sliding my ID card in between the door and frame.

I walked inside, setting the bags on the counter before heading upstairs. I set the plush on my bare bed, smiling at him before grabbing my sketchbook and beginning to sketch him in that 1920's cartoon style.

He looked stunning.

By the time I had finished, it was fairly late and I hadn't eaten since the night before. I went downstairs and made myself some food, making my mom some as well. It wasn't the best but I hadn't been able to learn how to cook yet.

My feet carried me back upstairs and I looked around my room. My plush had been moved to the chair, leaving my bed empty again.

"Mom must have moved him." I muttered to myself and grabbed my sketchbook. The drawing still looked normal and cute. A giggle escaped from my smile as I looked at how he looked on paper.

The stars twinkled outside. It was clearly very dark already for them to shine this bright. With an exasperated sigh, I grabbed a blanket and pillow before laying in my bed.
