There were once two little girls called Mary Ann and Mary Jane.Mary Ann's mother was dead and her father had married again.Her stepmother had a little girl of her own,just the same age as Mary Ann.She was called Mary Jane.
Now the stepmother was jealous of Mary Ann,for she was a pretty child,and merry and kindhearted.Mary Jane,her stepsister,was plain,and so sulky and bad-tempered that no one liked her.Whenever anyone came to play in the garden,it was always merry Mary Ann they asked for,and never sulky Mary Jane.
It wasn't long before Mary Ann found that she was expected to do all the housework,whilst her lazy stepsister lay in bed late and never helped at all!Mary Ann didn't mind.She went about singing gaily,and did all her work as well as she could.
