Fayre

I was in my room one evening, doing what I know best, sewing when my personal maid came to call me. She told me my parents had requested for my presence in the living room.

"You called me, father?" I asked him after I walked into the living room. My mother was there together with my twin sister, Fahreen. But she was in tears. But on the other side my mother was wearing a mysterious smile that made me suspect something worse from their call.

"Yes, my dear." Answered my father. "We have something important to tell you."

"You are going to get married." My mother blurted out.

And just like that, in three months, I was standing at the altar with a man whom I hardly knew. And if that was not enough, I was one month pregnant. The man who was standing next to me, my husband, was marrying me because I was pregnant and because his father had threatened to disown him if he hadn't married me.

After the priest had pronounced 'you may kiss your bride' Declan, my husband, hardly touched my lips with his. I clearly understood him because he was forced to marry a complete stranger and before everyone he was forced to display. But I was wrong. Declan hated me and my whole being. And he made it clear a few days later when he got back from work. He had canceled our honeymoon and his main reason was he had a deal to close.

"Fayre..." he started. "We need to talk."

"What about?" I asked calmly although my conscious warned me that I wasn't going to like what he was about to tell me.

"I'll go to the point since I don't like wasting time."

"I'm listening."

"I believe you are aware that I was forced into this marriage, right."

So was I. I wanted to tell him but I held my tongue. Speaking out my mind would have caused Declan to ask questions that I was aware were going to bring problems especially to my family.

"Yes, I know."

"With that being in light, I would like to make a few things clear. You and I are complete strangers. I will have nothing to do with you and it'll be the same for you. Whatever I do with my life is none of your business."

"What about the baby?" I asked and I believe he was clearly paying attention to my voice, he would have noticed that I was about to cry from his rejection.

"I'll be a father to him or her when it is born. But don't expect me to come with you to the clinic for the monthly checkups. I'm a busy man, that you should be aware of by now. The driver will accompany you."

"Okay. Is that all?"

"Yes and ooh, please don't go outside introducing yourself as Mrs. Declan Orquio. You are not my wife." And with that he left the living room. I sat down and started crying. What have I gotten myself into? There was no one to blame for the misfortune that I was going through except my family.

For the next two months, I hardly saw Declan. He either got home very late or he never slept home at all.  He had made it clear that whatever he did, was none of my business. And I respected his decision. I poked my nose where it belonged; into my business. My baby. The pregnancy was really driving me crazy. I had morning sickness almost each and every day and not mention nausea and vomiting. For some point, I thought about getting abortion. But that was out of request. Abortion served death as its penalty.

Declan's house was really huge and nice. It had everything one would need in a house. Big gardens, a pool, a small golf course, a large parking lot among others. It took me almost three days to tour myself around. And of course, my pregnancy added to the list of making my tour around the house longer.
He didn't have many workers. There was an old lady, Olivia, whom I got to find out was Declan's nanny. She had been taking care of him since he was a little boy. There was another lady who helped out doing other chores apart from cooking. It was Olivia's speciality. And there was the gardener. He was in charge of everything that was outside the house.
