Best Friend [Choose Your Own Adventure]

[A/N In this story, B/F means the name of whoever your best friend is. Y/N is your name. This is a self insert story, the first one I've actually done.]

     "B/F?" Your lonely call echos down the forest path, growing quieter and quieter until you can't hear the echo anymore.

     You wait a few minutes, seated upon your downed tree, but there was no response. "B/F?" You call again, actually climbing to your feet this time to see if you can hear better standing up. The cat-like ears you have twitch back and forth, trying their hardest to catch even the smallest bit of sound. But even your heightened neko hearing is having trouble picking up sound.

     Over there. The slight sound of a muted footstep drew your attention. Could that be B/F? He always did like to pop out and scare you during these games. "B/F, I know that's you." You call out, peering into the bushes from where the sound came from.

     Cat eyes, much like yours but green, peer back at you. They were rather high in the bushes, another indicator that it wasn't just some forest animal. "B/F, seriously, I can see you." You say to the eyes, getting a little annoyed now. B/F knew that once he was found he was supposed to come out. Sniffing the air, you catch a trace of B/F's scent. You know for sure it has to be them in the bushes, right?

     "I'm afraid B/F is a little... indisposed at the moment, little neko." The voice came from the same place as the eyes, and a very tall man rose from the bushes, wearing B/F's clothes. His ears and eyes changed back into that of a fae, the only shapeshifters of this world.

     Frightened, you take a step back, your tail twitching nervously. "Who... Who are you? What did you do to B/F? If you hurt them, I swear to the great Yoi I'll-"

     He cut you off, holding up an orb. "Here's your precious B/F, neko." he said with a wry grin.  Inside was an image of B/F, wandering through an forest, the near twin to this one. But, that one was covered in ice. A deep blue; a hard freeze. No being could survive out there long but those that lived there. That part of this world belonged to the Fae and the Windigos, the creatures of chaos and cold.

It was where they left people to die.

     You glance up at the fae in front of you, your fear turning to anger. "You bastard!" You spit out, a harsh edge to your words that would have cowed a lesser person. "What did B/F ever do to your kind?! They were the sweetest type of person! They wouldn't hurt a fly!"

     The fae just laughed, each laugh sounding like honey poured over glass shards. "Y/N, you're so naive sometimes. B/F is innocent; its you that we want. They are just the bait, and our plan seems to have worked quite well, don't you think?" As he finished speaking, more fae appeared in a circle around you, silent as the wind as they all became visible. Concealment was another trick the Fae used to get what they wanted.

     Your eyebrows pinch together as you think. There's no way you'd be able to fight so many of them, so that left two choices. Go with them to their Queen and see what she wanted, or find a method of escape and go rescue B/F.

     Time seemed to stop as you considered your options.
