unknowing

I blinked.

Once, twice, and I stared ahead at what was in front of me. At a first glance I thought it was just a shadow, and if no one took a second glance, then no one would notice what it actually was.

To tell the truth, I didn't know what it was either.

I shut my eyes, a fingers raised to scratch at my head, wondering if I was just imagining things. Possibly, the lack of sleep finally getting to me, one of many nights where I've been unable to fall asleep. Unable to get to bed, staring, wondering, pausing to ask mindless questions that would appear in my mind.

My head tilted to the side, eyes squinting against the afternoon light to glance once again at the figure, the shadow, the unnoticeable figure. It looked like... a cat or something similar to the sort.

"Hey kitty." I cooed, for lack of knowing what else it could be.

It moved. A step, another, closer towards me. As it walked out of the shadows, an eyebrow of mine was raised, a puzzled expression coming over me. It wasn't a cat, or anything... natural at all. It was simply a black, dark, figure, an arching back and four legs. Though, much, much larger than I had originally thought it to be.

Way to big to be a regular house cat.

I took a step back, one for each it took forward, a slight sheen of sweat forming on my forehead. I wanted out. There was no way I was going to go ahead with this. I could feel the pressure of my teeth against my botton lip, my fingers curling to a fist, nails digging in to the palms of my hand.

A step back, one, two.

Shit.

I hit a wall against my back, and my eyes flitted from side to side, looking for a way out of this mess. If I could just run into the house then --

I turned, breaking off into a sprint towards the front door, and I made the mistake of looking behind me.

It was right at my heels, snarling, and growling. The bright red glare of it's eyes, the vicious stare that wanted nothing more than to knock me down. I shook my gaze away, focusing instead of getting away.

Instead, there was a flash of black at the corner of my eyes, and I turned once again, my mistake this time, not paying attention to where I was running, and tripping onto the grass. Even as I fell, I could see the familiar plaid and the not so familiar sheen of metal.

"Ethan...?"
