Life sucks and then you die.
That's what I was always told atleast, the cold crisp autumn air whipped around me bringing me back to real life. I missed the bus so now I have to walk to work. It's not an easy task on 3 hours of sleep and it being 40 degrees out.
I pushed the door open to the small shop I worked at, 'Rustys grocery' flashed with a blinking 'G' I looked at Rusty who was the owner "good morning, Sweetie. So I have a question"
Rusty is a sweet older man, much like a dad figure. I've worked for him for years, he does whatever he can for his workers. I nodded at him as I laid my coat behind the counter.
"Liz called out, sick with the flu. Can you cover her shift?" Great... a double shift. I need the money tho. "Of course, Big guy. I got it covered." He smiled at me "I knew I could count on you." He walked to the back room where he worked most of the time.
I walked over to the sign and flipped it to 'Open' and started getting everything ready for the customers. The start of a 13 hour shift...
I looked at the clock, its 7 at night and rusty was nice enough to let me have a 2nd lunch since I was pulling a double shift. I set the box of cookies I was stocking behind my counter and peaked my head around to rustys office "Hey big guy, I'm heading to my lunch. I'll only be around 30 minutes." He nodded "take your time. I've got it under control." I turned and grabbed my coat; swiftly putting it on as I walked out the door. I went down the street to a coffee shop, I needed some kind of energy.
A loud bell chimes when I walked through, I quickly ordered a black coffee before they shut down and hurried out, it was dark and a whole lot colder now. I instantly missed the warmth of the shop, I hurried and walked back sipping my coffee enjoying what warmth it gave me.
Not many people come to the shop at night so the black car that sat in the parking lot struck my attention. I walked in and seen a man walking around... A handsome one at that.
His hair was jet black, slicked back and fixed nicely, he was clean shaved, he had black slacks on and a grey button up with the top 2 buttons undone. He was a beautiful man, he was tall and in shape. Every womans dream man.
I sat my coffee down and cleared my throat getting his attention, he whipped around and looked at me. "Can I help you, Sir?"
He smiled real big "Shouldn't the staff be asking that?" I slid my coat off and put my name badge on "I am the staff." I let out a giggle, he turned his body my way "oh, I'm sorry, Adeline."
The way my name slid off his tongue dancing on his deep raspy voice. It could make any woman melt. "I was just looking for something to snack on, I'm on my way home and haven't ate much today." I nodded "Anything certain in mind?" He shook his head "I'll find something, thank you tho." I nodded and walked behind my counter picking up the box of cookies I was working on "If you need anything just hollar."
I was on my knees still working on cookies on the bottom shelf and I heard a voice clear, I knew who it was and what it meant. I stood up and walked to the register, he had a Lunchable and chocolate milk. I fought back a giggle, a grown ass man and hes eatting food that a child eats?
"That'll be $2.34." He handed me a $5.00, I typed it in and gave him his change. "Have a good night, sir." He nodded "You do too, Adeline. I'll see you soon."
He grabbed his bag and pulled his cell phone out as he walked away and put it to his ear, he glanced back at me and mumbled something into his cell phone. The door slowly shut behind him.
See you soon? That's creepy.
