I hated the night shift. It wasn't the working at night part that I hated, I was actually rather fawn of sleeping in a little bit. It was the walking home at night part that I hated. Ever since The Flash started running around Central City things have been both safer, and more dangerous. There was an outbreak of metahumans, so the criminals that did decide to fight against The Flash were on a completely different level.

I requested to only work the morning shift, so I could avoid said danger, but when a coworker needs coverage, so she can get surgery there is only so much the general manager can do. So, I held my bag close, kept my head down, and made sure I didn't bump into anyone. Sometimes living in fear, was the best way to survive in a city crawling with metas. I wanted to move, long before the particle accelerator exploded, but once it did, it became a lot harder to save money, because everything kept getting destroyed.

I walked passed my streets corner store and could see my apartment just four buildings down. I was only covering my co-worker's shift tonight, and then I wouldn't have to do this again, at least for a while. I shoved my hand in my pocket and wiggled my fingers around until I felt my keys. I wanted to be ready to unlock my door as soon as I stepped in front of it.

I heard a crackling sound behind me, and my body stiffened. If I stopped walking and looked behind me, that could give the person behind me a chance to do something to me. Jump me, kill me, maybe something worse... If I ran, it could make things worse too. I continued walking and tried to make it seem like I didn't hear anything. The crackling became louder and closer. It didn't sound like footsteps, or someone unwrapping something, it sounded more like fire. Was something on fire? I hadn't noticed anything, but then again, I was trying to avoid noticing anything.

I stopped walking and contemplated between looking back and continuing to walk. If I kept walking I would avoid danger, my sole purpose in living in a city like this. However, someone could be hurt, and I could at least call the cops once I reached the safety of my apartment.

I slowly started to look over my shoulder. A man wearing a yellow and red suit, with flames around his hands and head was walking towards me. I felt my stomach sink, and the little confidence I had drained completely from my body. Why? I just wanted to live in a peaceful town, like I did growing up. Why, out of all things, did fire have to be the thing that ended me?

My feet weren't working. I wanted to run. Run to my apartment, run to a side street, I didn't care. I just wanted to run, somewhere away from the burning man, but my feet wouldn't work. The closer he got, the more cowardly I felt.

"Get to safety," the man yelled. He turned his attention to me. "Get to safety," he repeated when I didn't move. Why was he telling me to get to safety? Wasn't he going to kill me?

A man, made of some sort of shiny, silver metal turned around a corner and started running towards us. The man on fire turned his attention to the metal man. "They are heading this way," the metal man shouted, and sped up. The burning man spread his arms out, and the flames grew larger. his body started to rise off of the ground, and a trail of flames followed behind him as he lifted further and further from the ground. A flying, flame-covered metahuman? It still wasn't the weirdest thing I'd seen, but it didn't make me any less scared.

"Get her to safety, I got them." He pushed his hands to the side, and his body changed direction.

The metal man ran towards me, and my body started shaking with fear. His arms opened wide, and his body hit against me, engulfing me in his arms. "This way ma'am." He lifted me just enough, so we could move without my feet dragging us. His body was as hard as steel and just as cold. He held me tight enough, so my body didn't bang against him as he ran, and I could feel a bruise already forming below my rips from his tight grip.
