Every good story starts in the darkness. It helps to clear the mind and shed light onto the story that will take place. Everyone believes that the darkness is evil, but I see it as a sense of clarity and comfort. For in the darkness, one can dream. It is something that I will never be able to do or accomplish due to my circumstances. For there is always a light that ruins it all, and that happens to be me. So as the vision of darkness looms over everyone one else, it is but a sentiment that has wrapped me over like a blanket all my life. All that is ruined when someone turns on the light.
I roll around the surface of the uncomfortable bunk that held me up in the night. My back felt the sting of an uncomfortable position as the arose to sit up. The silver walls gleamed as the patrol team walked by with a light. However miniscule the light was, the reflective wall amped the intensity up. Suddenly a woman's voice came over the intercom. It was a grizzly voice that sounded like she had smoked a pack of cigarettes before speaking. The voice was old and also had a jersey accent that was very bold in her speech. It called to all the inmates of the Pangea prison, " Get yall asses up. It is the time to wake up and collect your share of moon rocks. Y'all better git!" My bunkmate, Trista, looked at me with a big smile on her face. Her sandy hair curled around her small face as she bounced up to greet the depressing day. Her freckles splotched in random places on her face against her milk chocolate skin. Her violet eyes shone with excitement as she stared into my soul, though she didn't know it. She was a very beautiful woman, and her personality was as big and warm as the sun itself. Her voice was deep and flowed like honey, and every word she said sounded as beautiful as a song. I wonder how a woman like her got into prison.
"Erin, you won't believe it!" she said to me. "What is it Trista, another dream about my mother?" I responded back, for she knew my mother before she died in the prison. "No silly, it's your birthday! You're now 16 years old! If you were out of prison, you'd be able to drive your own pod!" Trista had a gleeful look on her face that I couldn't emulate. I felt miserable, and I knew she could probably tell, she was like the mother I never had. " What's wrong Erin. No one should be this depressed on their birthday." I wanted to speak up, but I couldn't. I still felt like a child. Ever since my mother died, I've had to finish out her sentence. Too bad she had over 100 years in prison. I don't even know what she did to deserve this kind of treatment. Although I know the elements are pretty strict about how they rule their land. The elements rule over all the different territories around the galaxies. Their supreme leader is the element of knowledge, for knowledge is power. They create all the different rules and sometime make the prisoners here their slaves or servants. They love their power and would do anything to keep it.
I stood in front of the beautiful bunkmate, who looked worried about me. Suddenly I started to cry. Trista started to embrace me but as I tried to pull away, she pulled my into her breast. They were really big, I believe she told me around a size F, and felt soft and comforting. I just cried and I felt guilty for it. I guess I cried because I realized for the first time that I would never be able to leave the bunk ever, and that my mother's sentence must be carried out until the end of my life. I released from her grasp and decided to embrace the fact that it was that day, so I walked over to the silver wall and picked up my mother's rose knife from under my bunk. I scratched another tally mark into the cold wall. Trista smiled. "I guess now I'm officially 16." I said. I had no feeling behind those words, but at least it made Trista smile.
A patrol team member burst into the cell, and dragged Trista and me outside. " What the hell do ya think your doing Creste and Sunbel? You guys should be at breakfast. What's the hold up. You first Sunbel. This better be worth my time." Trista looked up at him, her eyes looking straight into his mind, as the patrol team member backed up into a wall. " It's Erin Crest's 16th birthday sir, I believe I have a right to celebrate my deceased friend's daughter's birthday. Does that sound ok to you, or am I going to have to take this to the court?' Trista looked serious. "N-no. I believe you are ok." The member picked up his transmitter, "Code RE3D9-70. Birthday call." Trista then grabbed my hand and walked to the breakfast station.
