Of all the days, today is when the force decides to give me a new partner. Is the chief doing this to me on purpose? The train of thought that I was riding comes to a halt; well more like someone high jacked it, and then proceeded to drive off the rails.
"Deputy Charlie Agnes, reporting in sir!"
"Speak of the devil, Detective Hatchet, this is your partner."
I look down at the wide eyed dried carrot in front of me. He looks like he's ready to have his mind molded, shame that I failed pottery class and I most certainly am no ghost here to cuirass you from behind.
"I look forward to working with you sir!"
I snap my tooth-pick in half, swallowing one half and spitting the other at the boy; this slacked backed hippy has the gall not to stop it. I storm out of the office faster than a buzzed dragon on Adderall. Soon I start digging into the kid for fallowing me.
"Sorry sir, but since we are working together we need to-"
I slam the carriage door behind me. This rookie thinks he has what it takes, what happens when a elf pops out ready for his next snack!? No matter how much training you have your never ready for that first real piece of danger, heck some guys never get ready for it. That's the difference between a cop and a mouthy match stick, starring fear right in its teeth and telling it to shove off!
"Sir if we could just-"
Of course he gets in, ah well hope he's buckled up. I ignite the rune and the carriage's horse familiar springs into action, bolting forward down the bumpy road.
"Woah!"
Ha! If the kid can't handle a little speed, he won't make it past this today. Honestly I feel bad for him, any other day he might have a shot, however slim, but not today. As we bolt past the nice part of towns with shining armor and silky robes, we begin to enter that sleaze square.
"Where are we going?"
I tell the kid to get ready, because ain't no way he seen anything quite like Ashling Cove! Sleaze sneeze's and seeps out of every nook and cranny this place has. Here you don't look for crime, it has a way of finding you. As all seems fine we hear that first scream of danger.
"It came from over there!"
Blonde you don't got to tell me where it came from, I have out heard a leaping leopard in the middle of a dagger storm. As we stop and investigate we find a shady football shaped goblin standing over a fainted young centaur women.
"Freeze!"
"It wasn't me you nob head!"
As I pull back my over eager partner, I give the small gobo a nod. I try to tell the kid that we don't need another cop with a goblin prejudice.
"But how do you know that the culprit is gone."
Ain't it obvious, were still standing aren't we? If the culprit was here either us of them would be bleeding on the floor right about now. I go back on forth with the oblong goblin until the puzzle pieces start coming together. It seems the young lady here got into a spat with her Minotaur boyfriend over his rode usage when he started having a fit. After a back and forth and a swing was takin, the bull headed boy toy ran away.
"We need to head after him!"
I shake my head at the kid; no way he is calm enough to handle the situation. I have him sit put while going to track the raging bull down. He has to be somewhere in this town, and if that's the case, I will find him. I pin down his location after talking to some confused passerby's. I knock on the door to an old run down gym. No answer. I sure do love doing things the hard way. I kick the door down and lunge into the building. I was expecting the place to be run down, but not this bad. Clearly it's been recently wrecked. Fallowing the slamming noise I encounter a fairly angry looking beaver kin.
"Can I help you officer?"
Probably not, but I sure could help you bud. However no matter how hard I try I can't peacefully get this old geezer to move out of the way and let me into the back room. Glancing around I see pictures of a strong looking Minotaur boxer pinned to the walls. So you won't give your ace up, heck you probably are the one who put him on those arcane drugs to begin with. Before things start to get messy my daycare project runs in covered in sweat.
"Hang on, just a minute!"
It seems he brought the girly from earlier.
"Dran, I know you didn't mean to hurt me, its fine now. Listen I know you haven't been able to make any money recently, but you don't need this! Where is the Minotaur I fell in love with? Where's that fighter who could always get back up!?"
"I can't do it anymore Marie, I just can't... How can I support you, if I can't even make enough money to cover my gym fees."
"We have always made it past hard times together, why not now? What makes this one so different?!"
"Because I don't believe in myself anymore, that's why! I can't fight like I used to."
Bleh, to the chaotic planes with all this mushy stuff. I kick down the door and send a right solid left hook into this young bucks head. With a look of shock and terror in this kids eyes I start shouting about weakness, being right and wrong, feeling like if you can't protect the one closest to you how much of a failure you really are. Somewhere along the way it turned into a pep talk about getting back out there, and using those failures to make sure that from then on you can protect those close to you. I make myself feel sick sometimes with that blatant camel cheese. Somehow though it's enough to make him get up and promise his girl that he is going to do better. Probably just scared him straight with my punch is all. I tell the girl and the geezer that if they don't press charges I didn't see a thing.
"Of course not!"
"As long as he becomes the champ he can repay me later."
With that I take my leave. Shame I didn't even get to use good old Bertha. Maybe next case I can bring it out and-!
"That was some nice words sir."
Oh yeah the kids still here. Whatever, words don't get you far in this world, all that matters is the speed that you discern friend from foe. Suppose I'll put the kid in the friend category for now, but since I've been wrong before, I'm not telling him that.
