The air was thick with the rich, coppery sent of blood that flowed out of their bodies like red waterfalls. Those animals came out of nowhere, teeth bared, salvia dripping out . We were all caught off guard. My mother and Zoe were the first to get mauled– their painful screams and shrill shrieks filled the air from every direction. It's their cries along with the neighboring campers that won't leave my mind. We didn't have a second. It all happened so fast, in a blur.
My father tried to protect my brother and me, but a shrill cry pierced through the snarls and growls of the pack closing in on us. My father collapsed as crimson dripped down his leg, jagged pieces of flesh hung from his thigh. He managed to army crawl to one of our tents. He pulled out a tent spike and sunk it deep within the creature's chest before it could pounce on us. It yelped in pain. But, that didn't matter because out of the pack emerged a large beast, bigger than the others. His sinister yellow eyes flashed.
The commotion began to settle. And then, I saw what had attacked us. I first thought it was a pack of wolves that were striking us, but these beasts were the hairiest men I have ever laid eyes on. These things did not exist. Could they be real? They are just folklore, right? Horror stories to give people a good scare. But, these werewolves were real. The largest of them all, perhaps the leader, assessed me with odd curiosity. It was then that he lunged for me. My reflexes made me hold my arm up to protect myself. My brother cried out for God's help.
The excruciating pain seared through my body as I felt the sharp teeth penetrated my skin as it gripped my arm in its massive jaws, and shook me. My arm was on fire. My brain was overcome with feral smells and snarls. And, the agony, oh god, the pain. I thought I would die for sure, my brother the next victim. He whimpered behind me somewhere in the trees. If it wasn't for Papa Bill showing up with a sawed-off shotgun.I was going to be sick, especially with the pain, blood spilling down my arm, and the massacre scattered around me. I was going to pass out. My adrenaline level dropped, my head spun, and I shook all over. Papa yelled to Zander to take me into a tent. One that was not shredded into ribbons. Before, darkness set in, Dad's trembling last words tumbled out."
"Bill, shoot me – I'm a danger now." Dad begged." I can't do this to my children."
A sharp shot rang out and everything went blacked. When I woke, Papa was talking on his cellphone outside the tent. Where was my brother? My arm was wrapped in bandages. My stomach still churned and I was feverish. My head ached.
" I can't do it, Titus. She is my granddaughter. I'll find a way, damn it. I'll find a way to deal with this. I trust you to keep this a secret."
My body started to convulse uncontrollably. My limbs were not my own. They flopped and flailed. I shrieked and fell into the dark hole once again.
It was long after that night I discovered the truth about my grandparents .They were hunters. My parents. Non-hunters.
I inherited my family's burden. My parents were destined to be hunters, but they didn't want that life. They tried to protect us from these evils. They tried to. My. secret. If the other hunters knew, they all would turn on me in a second. I can't blame them. I would do the same. I should have just ended my own life a long time ago. I could be a danger to to others. The only reason I stay is for Zander. I need to protect my baby brother. I could not save my other family members, but I'lldo anything to keep my brother safe.
I still have nightmares about that night.
