It was evident that Zander’s body language had completely changed and that was definitely because of Carlene. Carlene was sporting a short, glistening pink dress which glimmered in the light that shone on her from the spotlights. Her looked was completed with a golden tiara which matched perfectly with her dress. She was a very beautiful girl and was one of the most popular girls at their High School. Carlene had always done anything in her power to be notice, but when her popularity grew so did her ego. From her striking beauty, her sapphire colored eyes and her long blonde hair she was irresistible. Her presence demanded attention and she enjoyed it, as she walked into the room, other students parted as their eyes rested on her.

“Hi guys...missed me? She said looking down at her phone texting away.

“Well we know it’s not a party without you” Avery said sarcastically.

“Come on Zander let’s go dance, my sister is a total let down.” She said pulling him away from Avery.

Avery and her sister were total opposite, even though they were only a year apart. Carlene had always been more popular than her sister; she was always more outgoing whereas Avery was more focus on different things. Avery wasn’t the typical teenager her friends always claim that she was forever secretive; strangers would assume she was just really shy. Only Avery knew the secrets of her past and the darker secrets that laid in her family-but so she thought. Everyone always assumed that the sisters would be really close since they both had been separated numerous times as children. When Avery was only seven both her and her sister had been place in separate foster homes. From that moment they had been in and out of foster care, however they were lucky enough, a few years back a newly married couple (Andrea and Rick House) friends of the family had decided to adopt the both girls. The sisters were inseparable until one day they just drifted apart.

Avery looked on at Zander and Carlene, his hands around Carlene’s waist her hands around his muscular shoulders. His face lighting up as she stared into his eyes for a second before she looked down at the dance floor ,their feet moving in time with the music, their bodies moving closer to each other with every step. Finally their lips meet in a burst of passion sweetening their mouths but burning Avery’s heart. The pain she felt actually made her step back holding her chest- the pounding uncontrollable.

She saw Zander glanced at her, his eyes staring through her soul- it was too much. She swung around and whispered to herself.”Come on Avery don’t cry, don’t let him see you crying.” Her voice so heavy, her voice breaking tears tracing her cheeks. She lifted her elongated dress preventing it from dragging on the floor, she was going to leave, Nothing didn’t matter anymore. It’s like what they say “when you love someone you have to let it go.”

The dance had been going as plan everyone seem to be having a good time-except for Avery. She headed for the main exit trying not to draw any unnecessary attention to her.  Before she could leave Elliot sneaked up from behind her and held her arm.

“Where are you going Av, is everything ok?’’ she said holding her friends both shoulders looking straight at her.

“Everything is fine El, it’s just…never mind it doesn’t matter.” Avery said looking across the dance floor and straight at Zander, Zander simultaneously raising his head staring in the girls’ direction.

“Did you tell him? Well of course not, because you rather do nothing about it…Avery you have love Zander since , well forever no one could ever love him like you do-no one” she said her  tone dead serious.

“It’s too late, sorry El I can’t stay here.” She finally admitted but her step was interrupted by the following announcement.

“Can I have everyone ones attention” principal Rogers shouted into the mike. The entire gym of students came completely silent, focusing their attention on him.

“This is an announcement for all students who belong to grade eleven and twelve. A number of you have been selected to participate in a nationwide project where only the best students have been selected to attend. The following names I’m about to call must meet me tomorrow morning in my office. So let me see, Olivia John, Madison Hamilton, Elliot Duncan, Avery Shadows, Zander Gran, Ellie Lennon, Cole Parker, Ethan Benson, and Aiden Clan.” He said flipping through the pages in his hands examining the students’ profiles. In that second Avery looked over to Zander and smiled warmly at him. Her heart pounding she was finally going to get a chance to be with Zander alone without any interruptions from Carlene. Before Avery could celebrate her victory, principal Rogers turned around one last time this time spiting into the mike.

“Sorry there has been an error and because the twelve grades had dominated academically, there seem to be only one eleven grader who made the list and that student is Carlene Shadows.” He finally ended, his facial expression almost surprise that Carlene had made the list. Avery sighed out loud her sister had shared everything with her for a long time and now the only boy she had ever loved.

“Where are you going?” a loving voice whispered from behind her the only gentle voice she knew. Avery always did this thing when she was around Zander, she always pretended like she didn’t care about him it worked most of the time.

“Home Zander you know the place where people go when their tired- I’m tired.” She said looking down the entire time.

“Well first, you now got here like an hour and a half ago, second you have been planning this party for two months, third you…’’ he said before Avery interrupted him.

“Stop..please stop!I don’t need any reasons for my action especially from you.” She finally blurted out.

“Alright…it’s fine I get it, I know you don’t like your sister but to think you would take it out on me, since I have started dating her you haven’t said more than two words to me.’’ He said angrily. But he had got it all wrong every single word. Avery didn’t say those things to him because she hated the thought of her sister; she just hated the thought of him being with anyone who wasn’t her.

“I’m sorry…” she said almost embarrassed by how she had acted towards him.

“Ohh you’re sorry well Av I have to say I don’t except that apology.” He said jokingly.

“Really now, you don’t say”

“You see my heart is broken by those cruel words and well I’m just hurt and I think the only way that my broken heart can be mended is with a dance from you.” He said in his fake British accent and his stretching hand out to her.

“I would love too” she replied.

“I don’t think so!’’ a voice announced through the endless music of the fair night, shattering the moment destroying faith.
