Jyn was the poster child for change. All her life she'd experienced it, mostly unwillingly. At age six, her mother had been brutally shot when their home had been broken into. Her father had been taken and she'd been left for dead.

A family friend, Saw Gerrera, has taken her in and trained her as one of his recruits. He was a gang leader, a fanatic, a zealous rebel against all authority.

During one of his heists when Jyn was sixteen, Saw's band of rebels was caught and all were sentenced to time in prison. Jyn, being a minor, managed to procure only a five year sentence.

To say the least, her reputation wasn't the best.

After Jyn had been released, she'd searched hard for a job, any job, that would take her. She found it as a waitress at her local diner, serving coffee and sandwiches to the residents of Townsend, Tennessee, population, 444.

Besides the diner, Townsend also had a small coffee shop, a Dollar General, a couple pubs, and a pharmacy. If you wanted more than that, you'd have to drive several miles to any of three towns: Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, or Sevierville.

On one lazy afternoon, after Jyn's shift was up at the diner, she stopped by the coffee shop, Beans, Please, to grab some caffeine and a pastry or two.

She entered the shop and looked around. The entire place smelled like coffee, as it should. It was decorated in all shades of brown. Three tables and two small couches were available to sit at. A couple of girls, appearing to be in high school, sat at one table, chatting amiably.

The man working behind the counter surprised Jyn. She didn't recognize him, and living in a small town, you knew almost everyone.

He was tall and lean, but still muscular. His dark curly hair fell in his deep brown eyes. His skin was the color of toffee, and a slight smirk seemed ever present on his lips. The name tag pinned to his apron read Cassian.

Jyn approached the counter, her lips quirking ever so slightly as he looked up and spoke.

"How may I help you today, señorita?" He had a noticeable Hispanic accent and his eyes sparked with mischief.

"I don't think I've seen you around before. Are you new to town?" Jyn asked.

Cassian nodded. "Just moved here three weeks ago. I got this job last week. I already had experience in a coffee shop before, so I didn't need much training. Started working right away."

"I thought you were new."

Cassian held his hand across the counter. "Cassian, but you already new that." He gestured to his name tag.

Jyn shook his hand. "Jyn."

He smiled. "I like you already. You've got spunk. And guts. Not many people would ask if I'm new here."

"Well, my reputation isn't the best, so I'm glad to know you must like me for me." Jyn smirked.

"I wouldn't know your reputation. Unless it's really that bad. Care to share?"

"It's not as bad as I make it sound. I just got in with the wrong people. Made some bad decisions, served some time in prison as a minor. Got out, turned my life around." Jyn shrugged.

Cassian gave a low whistle. "Dang."

Jyn tugged on her brown leather jacket. She'd just shared her life story with a practical stranger. And yet she was strangely okay with it.

"I can't imagine what your life's been like. That's kinda crazy." Cassian leaned on the counter.

"How 'bout you? Yours any better?" Jyn asked.
