Chapter 2

I groaned as I stretched; my bones popped and my muscles screamed after several hours of disuse. I opened the curtain and the sunlight filled the room. I groaned as the sudden light stung my eyes, then blinked several times and turned around. I walked to the bed and checked on Tyler, trying to be as quiet as possible. I pushed aside the canopy of the bed, and a warm glow of sunlight covered Tyler, making him seem even more beautiful. I sat on the edge of the bed carefully, trying not to make it creak or anything. The sunlight brought some of his veins out, making them appear like little rivulets. Without thinking, I traced them lightly, from his neck down to his wrist.

Suddenly, Tyler groaned, making me jump and pull my hand back swiftly. His head shifted and his eyes slowly opened, the long eyelashes fluttering lightly.
I smiled.

"You're awake; finally," I whispered.

He jerked up, and then groaned as his ribs protested. His face crumpled in pain as he cringed.

"Lay down; you are no position to move. Your body took some damage." I said, pushing him down.

He obliged, but still seemed restless.

"Who are you?" he said fearfully, his eyes wide.

"I'm a friend; my name is Deacon," I said.

I held out my hand, but Tyler flinched away from it, as if it were a snake and not a simple limb. I dropped the hand and looked at him as he in turn stared at me.

"Where am I?" he asked warily.

"You are in my home," I said. "I found you in the forest in really bad shape; I brought you here."

Tyler looked around and then looked at his hands; I could almost feel the sadness emanating from him.

"Do you remember what happened?" I asked.

He went pale and started to shake, almost violently. I stared on in sympathy, and grabbed his hand and held it.

"It's okay. They won't harm you here; they wouldn't even dare step foot into this area." I muttered the last part.

He took several deep breaths and gradually, his breathing subsided and he was calm again. He yanked his hand back, almost as an afterthought.

Suddenly, the door opened and Sally wheeled in a cart of food. Both Tyler's and my head snapped toward her simultaneously.

"HELLO!" she said cheerily, and I smiled a little at her mood.

Tyler jerked and groaned as a seemingly sudden bout of the pain racked him, and I grimaced as I practically felt it myself.

"Breakfast for the human," Sally said with less excitement. "Good Morning, Tyler; what will it be: pancakes with sausages, or waffles with bacon, or frosted cornflakes?" Sally said, still smiling.

I was about to interject, but I heard Tyler's stomach growl. I suppressed a smile and looked at him. His eyes were downcast.

"I'll... have... the waffles," Tyler mumbled almost incoherently.

"Good choice," Sally said, and grabbed the tray with the waffles. She set it in front of Tyler, and then leaned down to me and whispered in my ear: "Your breakfast is out in the hall."

"Enjoy, Tyler," I said and left with Sally, closing the door behind me.

When we were out in the hall, Sally handed me a bottle of blood. I unscrewed the cap and took a few swings, enjoying the taste of the sweet, warm, crimson liquid.
