"You're just a child in a mask." Snoke's cruel old voice spoke to Kylo as he kneeled before him, the words digging a knife into his chest. But that was not all.
He heard other voices. "I've failed you Ben, I'm sorry." Luke said on Crait.
"Take off that mask. You don't need it!" Han. His father.
"What do you think you'll see if I do?" His own voice played back at him.
"The face of my son."
A flash of red. Han Solo was dead.
The voices changed again, overlapping against each other. And throughout them all, one stood out like a beacon of hope.
Rey.
"Neither are you." She murmured her response. He didn't smile as she moved her hand towards his. He didn't dare. And when their hands met, the Force sang in his veins. Of course, happiness in his life didn't last forever.
The hut exploded, Luke barged in, and when Kylo awoke from his dream, he felt more alone than ever.
____________
"Supreme Leader, are you alright?" An officer asked him as he walked down a corridor. His mask was off and the dark circles under his eyes were evidence of his sleepless nights.
"It's nothing." He said, his voice adopting a mask of cool indifference. He fixed his cowl around his neck.
In reality, it wasn't. He was being torn apart day by day, and the dreams didn't help. He hid behind the illusion of the calm Supreme Leader, Master of the Knights of Ren, Jedi Killer.
The Supremacy had been destroyed, and the heart of the First Order was on a ship named The Shadow Blade.
"Get me Hux." He said indifferently as he made his way to the bridge.
"I'm here." Hux's weaselly voice came from behind one of the controls. "What do you want?"
"Don't talk to me that way, Hux," Kylo growled. Just seeing the general filled him with rage. Only later did he realize that it was Snoke's plan to pit them against each other. He calmed down a bit.
"Apologies Supreme Leader," Hux seethed. "How can I be of assistance to you?"
"I need the papers for the trade agreement with Naboo on my desk."
"They're already on your desk." Hux deadpanned. Kylo debated on whether to Force choke him right there, but then waved him off.
It had been difficult acquiring the agreements in the first place, with Naboo being a supporter of democracy and such. However, after seeing the changes that Kylo had made to the First Order, they had been a lot more open to negotiations. The purpose of this was to get there before the Resistance.
Kylo strode to his office, a dull room with dark grey metal walls and dark grey desk and chair. A thick stack of papers lay on it. Kylo groaned internally, but he soon got to work
Signing and initialing papers was a tedious task and after an hour of working, he felt boredom creep down his back.
And that's when Kylo realized that something was wrong. He looked up.
"Hey, Ben!" Luke said cheerily. He looked younger, like the days when Kylo was a child. He wore traditional Jedi robes and carried his lightsaber on his belt.
"Go away. I'm trying to work." Kylo said coldly.
"Aww, aren't you happy to see me?" Luke joked and sat on the side of Kylo's desk.
"Can you- Can you not?" Kylo groaned but Luke wasn't paying attention.
"I sense something's bothering you, Ben." Luke said concernedly.
Kylo felt a twinge of annoyance go through him as he heard Luke refer to him with his real name. "Don't call me 'Ben'. I am Kylo Ren and I will always be Kylo Ren."
Luke looked at him closely and Kylo could swear that he saw a shimmer pass through his eyes as he said. "I'm not so sure about that."
"Please go away." Kylo pleaded with his uncle, as he knew where this was headed.
"You're thinking about her again. How she touched your hand and said your name. You're in love with her!" Luke beamed and continued. "I'm sorry for interrupting your moment in the hut, but I think I was a little justified."
"You're wrong about that." Kylo murmured.
Luke's expression softened as he said, "You cannot deny the truth that is love, Ben remember that."
They stayed silent for a while after that. Kylo went back to doing his work and Luke started humming a song that he learned as a boy on Tatooine.
"Why are you here?" Kylo asked after about five minutes.
Luke didn't say anything for a few minutes and Kylo gave up on getting an answer back, but then Luke said something unexpected.
"Your grandfather wanted me to check up on you."
Kylo froze. "Darth Vader?" He asked tentatively.
Luke smiled. "I think that's his own story to tell."
"Why won't he talk to me himself?" Kylo asked frustratingly. He wished for a chance to speak to his grandfather. To ask him to give him some strength, to show him the way.
"He will talk to you when he is ready. And don't worry, the time will come." Luke said after seeing Kylo's deflated expression.
"What about Rey?" Kylo asked miserably. "When will I get to see her again?"
Luke laughed jovially. "Very soon actually. Very, very soon. I thought you said she betrayed you and you didn't want to talk to her."
Kylo looked like he was at a loss for words.
"I was in love too, you know?" Luke said wistfully.
Kylo looked at Luke curiously.
"Her name was Mara and she was the light of my life."
"What happened to her?" Kylo inquired.
A shadow passed over Luke's face as he said, "She died."
Another wave of silence fell on them again until Luke broke it. "You mentioned that you wanted to see Rey."
"No." Kylo denied, even though it was no use.
"Well, you're about to see her right now actually."
"Wait, what?" Kylo got up and reached toward his uncle, but Luke was already gone. And in his place, stood Rey, sweat dripping from her body, and her double-bladed lightsaber at his neck with an expression of absolute fury.
