Chapter Two

Abby awoke in a dark room with a pounding headache. She was slightly confused, until the memories from yesterday came flooding into her mind like a tidal wave. She was about to get up, when a warm hand pushed her back down into the bed. She immediately realized it was Darren, and he was in her room hovering over her for some odd reason.

“Uh... h-hey?” she stammered nervously, “What time is it?”

“A little after two A.M.” he said taking a seat in the corner again.

“I've been out since five?” she asked the question to herself and he laughed.

“Not to be rude but why are you in my house at 2 A.M.?” she asked him curiously.

“I was taking a walk in the woods, I missed it since I pretty much used to live there. Then I heard something, so I followed the noise. It turned out it was you passed out on the floor so I took you home.” He said nonchalantly. Abby nodded her head in understanding. She really didn't believe him, not that he was lying, but his words sounded like he rehearsed them in a mirror for an hour.

“You still didn't answer my question though. I asked why you were in my house?” she asked quickly before he could change the subject again.

“I...err...well when I found you I figured your parents would be frantic so I brought you up through the balcony,” he shifted his eyes to her balcony, “Then I stayed with you in case you had a concussion or something. You never know these days,” he sighed looking into her eyes again. She shifted uncomfortably under his gaze. He didn't know about her dad that went missing about five years ago. She never brought it up anymore because Maddie would always yell at her for being depressed. So she just blocked her dad out of her mind whenever he slowly started to creep back into her thoughts. Now though, it was uncontrollable. It was too late for her to block the swiftly moving images. A hot, salty tear rolled down her cheek.

“Hey what's wrong? Did I do something? I'm sorry” he said frantically trying to calm her down. He actually seemed to care about her, which was surprising to Abby.

“Sorry,” Abby said wiping her tears and getting her emotions under control. “Its just...my dad went missing awhile back and everyone tells me not to talk about it. But it’s so hard holding it in sometimes. Like I can burst any second because everyone around me expects me to be over it. But they wouldn't if it was their dad!” Abby shouted at him. He stared at her wide-eyed for a moment.

“I'm sorry Abby, if I knew I wouldn't have said anything...” Darren said letting his voice trail off.

“No-no I'm sorry for yelling like a maniac. I think I need some sleep that's all,” she laughed.

“Sorry I should go.” he said getting up going back towards the window. She was about to tell him he could stay, or at least use the front door. But he was already out the window climbing down the small tree near her window. Abby sighed and put her head on her pillow, drifting off into a peaceful slumber.

The next morning Abby awoke to a blaring alarm clock. She smashed her hand down on the snooze button before climbing out of her bed and getting ready for school. As she got ready, she went over what happened the day before. She recalled the moment when he had the look of love-if that's what it was- in his eyes, and when he gave her a hug. She was extremely confused as she walked downstairs and grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge before leaving the house. She chose to walk to school seeing as it was only about five minutes away. Before leaving, she decided to ask Darren if he would like to walk with her. When the door opened the boy she had seen before answered.

“Hello there beautiful. My name is William Smith. You can call me Will though, or anything else you'd like,” he winked at her.

“Err, right... Will is fine. So um I was looking for Darren?” Abby asked questioningly. They looked alike but they had different last names.
