"Carly is dead."

It was a simple sentence, only three words. But each one struck me with horror. No, it couldn't be true. It was a blank sentence full of empty words. They couldn't be true. They just couldn't. She was only thirteen. She just couldn't be dead. It was impossible. There was no way. She still had life left. So did I. But if Carly was gone, then I guess I am too. I was taken aback. It just couldn't be. We still have a friendship. Right? She couldn't drown. There was no way. She was a mermaid. There just was no way. We were going to grow up together. We were going to have a bakery. She was going to be an author. We were going to be at each other's weddings. Never give up on life. We would live next to each other. I was going to live in her closet. We were going to make Frank The Fat, French, Freaky Firefly. We could have been friends. Unlikely friends too. As a witch and a mermaid are expected to be at war. But all of that has dissolved. How was I going to go to school? I can't go to school without my best friend. My one true friend. Gone. How? Like I said, she couldn't drown. Did she just leave? But I.... I haven't paid back my debt! Of course! She has to come back. Or else I won't have paid off my debt. I guess I had Sydney. But she wouldn't be the same.
