"I...met a coven of your kind." Her eyes suddenly brightened, looking to me hopefully.

"Are they here? Can I meet them? How many are there? Is one of them -"

"I'm sorry," I cut in regretfully, "but they left Forks a few months ago." Her eyes that were full of life only just moments ago faded away, replaced with sadness and defeat.

"Oh," she said glumly, facing forward. I continued to stare at her puzzled.

"How come you have green eyes?" I couldn't help but blurt out.

"I'm a different kind of vampire," she answered dully, "a rare kind that people would fear."

"So -"

"We shouldn't be having this type of conversation here," she interrupted me sharply, "we can discuss after school if you want." She didn't say anything else after that.

Since English, we had the same classes together and in all of the classes, Melanie was assigned to sit beside me since I was the only one who had a spare seat beside me, seeing as it used to be occupied by...him.

When lunch came, Melanie was still at my side, following me to the food line. "Can you eat food?" I couldn't help but ask quietly. She gave a small nod much to my surprise. "Really?"

"I'm different from other vampires, Bella," she reminded me, only grabbing a small amount of food. "So where do you sit?"

"Uh..." My eyes trailed to the empty table that used to belong to a certain group. I looked at the table that held my...friends. "I sit with that group over there," I pointed to the occupied table. She raised an eyebrow at me when she followed my finger.

"Really?" She made a face. "They're...quite a bunch." I couldn't help but release a small snort at that. "Oh well...lead the way."

As soon as we sat down, they went silent and stared at us with gaped mouths. I cowered under their gaze, while Melanie simply raised an eyebrow at them. "What?" she asked them rudely. That snapped them out of their trance.

"Hi, I'm Mike Newton!" Mike introduced, holding a hand out to her, Eric following closely with eagerness. Everyone had their turn introducing each other, afterwards catching up with me, now that I was no longer...sulking, you could say.

After the small chat, Melanie and I mainly stayed quiet, listening to their banters. Melanie abruptly tensed in her seat beside me when a certain topic emerged from the group. Angela was trying to tell Lauren about giant bears she saw in the forests, only for Lauren to scoff along with Jessica. I had to doubletake when I saw Lauren's new hairstyle; it was like a boy haircut and was spikey. What brought that on? When did she even get that hair cut? Was I really out of it? Having enough of Lauren downgrading Angela, I spoke up. "No, she's right," I spoke up much to everyone's surprise. I explained to them hurriedly about the men who were hiking and were recounting their experience at Mike's parents' shop. I looked at Mike. "Right?"

"Uh, s-sure," Mike stuttered, eventually adding more information supporting my statement. Lauren merely "Hmph"ed and spoke with someone else in the group, ignoring me. Melanie chuckled quietly from beside me at Lauren's behaviour.

"She really doesn't like you," she mumbled to me. Then a bit louder, "I wonder what's got her knickers in a twist." Lauren snapped her head towards us with a sneer.

"What did you say, newbie?" Lauren sneered. Melanie wasn't affected.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Melanie replied innocently.

"I heard what you said -"

"Who said it was about you?" Melanie cut her off. "I mean, it's kind of sad to assume that whenever someone talks bad, it's pointed to you. You must be a total bitch to everyone, I'm assuming." Lauren and the others were speechless. "I'm not stupid, it's obvious you don't like Bella - probably ever since she entered high school. As soon as Bella is better from whatever heartache she's feeling, you turn into a bitch about it." Melanie did her classic head tilt. "I feel pity for you that in order to make you feel better of yourself you go and talk and act badly around everyone. News flash, Lauren, the world doesn't go around only you." She nodded to my way and Angela's. "So you're going to apologise to Angela and Bella for being a bitch, okay? You're sorry for not giving Angela time to explain her story, and you're going to apologise to Bella for being a bitch to her as soon as she arrived at this school. I'd also tell you to apologise to others, but I know that's asking too much for your simple mind." Melanie gave her a sly smirk that gave the right amount of intimidation. "So? I don't hear anything yet."

"S-Sorry, Angela, Bella," Lauren stuttered out, fear and shock in her eyes.

"It's okay," Angela and I chorused through our shock.

"I gotta," Lauren murmured, grabbing her bag, "I gotta go somewhere," Lauren left in a hurry of hurt and embarrassment. Everyone gaped at Melanie openly while she nonchalantly ate away at her food.

"What a first day, hey," she smirked, breaking the silence. I grinned at her in response, letting out a free laugh for the first time in ages. I like her.
