Chapter 14
Ally
“Jacksonville Sherriff’s Office, how may I direct your call?”
“Homicide Detective Erik Nickels please, this is Allison Daniels.”
“One moment please.”
I have no idea why I did not just call 911. That is usually the proper thing to do when someone is shooting at you, or was shooting at you. I guess I did not want Damien to get into trouble…
Get a grip! He killed someone!
After what feels like an eternity on hold, my friend picks up the phone. “Ally, what’s wrong…” was how he answered. Not a “Hello,” or “This is Detective Nickels.” He knew that if I was calling him through the station that something was wrong.
“Erik, I’m sorry to bring you into this and I honestly have no idea why I didn’t just call 911, but I need you to come to my house as soon as possible. There was someone at one of the houses across the river from me taking shots at me.”
“What do you mean taking shots at you?”
“I mean someone with a sniper rifle was across the river and shot into my house three times.”
“Stay on the phone with me; I’ll get dispatch to send a unit out…”
“No, please, just come by yourself. I don’t know what to do: I had a friend over that was here with me when the shots were fired. He is a retired marine; he went up to the roof and shot him.”
“He shot a man from your roof that was across the river?”
“I’ll explain when you get here, just please hurry.”
“I’m in the car and headed to you now. Who is this friend? Is he still there?”
“No, he left. I told him I was calling the cops, he asked me to let him make a call and take care of it, whatever that means. I told him I would call you instead and that if he did not want to talk to the police that he needed to leave. He’s been gone for maybe five minutes.”
“Are you sure the shooter was alone? If it really was a trained sniper, they rarely work alone.”
“I think so; my friend said he only saw one person.”
“And this guy just so happened to have a gun with him powerful enough to shoot someone across the river?”
“Yeah, I guess he did. It all happened so fast, it never crossed my mind that people do not usually carry around sniper rifles in their truck. Please hurry, I’m freaking out.”
“I’ll be there in about ten minutes. Stay inside and away from windows, I do not like knowing there is a man out there with a sniper rifle in his truck, friend or not. Officer Hernandez told me about your house getting broke into and I saw the man that attacked you at work yesterday when they brought him in for booking. Something about this is not right, Ally.”

Detective Nickels arrived at my house a few minutes after we hung up. He did a walk around of my property, looked at the bullet holes in the window, and then came inside to see the holes inside as well. He pulled the bullets out of my wall and had me take pictures of everything. He then decided to take me with him across the river to find the house the shots came from.
It was very easy for us to feel comfortable around each other. As he is getting older, his jet black hair is getting a little gray at the temples, and his smoky gray eyes are accented by tiny crow’s feet that are just starting to show on his pale white skin. Erik is one of those guys that gets better looking with age, and his sexiness does not hit you the first or second time you see him; it kind of sneaks up on you. Once you notice his perfectly straight teeth and his smoky gray eyes, you suddenly find yourself checking out his tall, lean frame and his slightly muscular shoulders, and then before you know it you are drooling and wondering how you didn’t notice him before.
