2007 marked the year of my life when I truly realized that as a person I had purpose. Up until that point I was just an empty boy. I was unable to comprehend the things that made life worth living. 2007 was the year my dad got married to my step mom Karen and I met my sister.

" Go on Jake, say hi to Annie" my dad points to Annie

"Hi" I spoke softly admittedly nervous of our first meeting.

Annie was thin and pale with curly brown hair falling to her shoulders. Her bright brown eyes reflecting her gentle soul. She gave me a small smile, clearly as anxious as I was and seeing her filled me with more self confidence.  I was so happy because I was not only getting a mom but also a sister. We were going to be a real family.

I could tell Dad was happy too with Karen by his side since he hasn't been this happen for a long time. Dad wraps his arm around Karen waist, he explains to me

"Jake you're the big brother so you need to protect your sister all the time",

Karen says to Annie with a grin,

" Annie you're the little sister, so when Jake's sad you have to cheer him up".

Both Annie and I turn to look at each other for a second and then we shout

"Yes!"

In my naive six year old mind I genuinely believed that we were going to be a family forever and that I will be there to protect Annie. On that day she and I became not only siblings but best friends who would never leave each other's sides.

" Hey Annie want to play with my new Lego set" I asked, holding in my hand the colorful Lego pieces.

"I've never played with Lego's before. I might not be very good at it" She frowned slightly

"Silly, playing with Lego's is about building cool towers and stuff. You don't need to be good at it. Here try to build a house" I place a Lego piece in her hand.

"Alright I'll give it a shot." she said with a unsure expression

"Hey I built a cute house!" she poked my rib enthusiastically.

" It is one of the most awesome Lego houses ever!" I cheered with my arms in the air, in such utter amazement of her creation.

In those days, life was so much easier and we were living in blissful times. I wish we could've kept having fun back then. If only I had known sooner that those days would end so soon...
