Finn's POV:

I pulled up in Millie's driveway. My stomach was swarming with bees. Bees of anxiety. What if she still believes I am a player? What if she hates the date? What if I look too casual?

I didn't usually have to worry about any of these things with other girls. Why do I care so much about Millie's opinion? Because she is beautiful and I care for her.

I walked up to the door of her house and knocked. Mr. Harbour opened the door and smiled at me.

"I remember you." He said with a sly smile. "You brought Millie home, passed out." I gulped and tucked my hands behind my back.

"Yes sir." I managed to spit out.

"I'm surprised you have the guts to show up here, or even take her on a date. I only have one thing to say to you, kid. She better not come home that way, again." I nodded and saw Millie behind him pulling him back.

"Don't scare him, David." She said giving him a serious look. She smiled at me and took my arm. "Sorry about him." She closed the door behind her and I took in her outfit.

She looked... beautiful.

"Its fine." I said shaking it off. We approached the car and I opened the door for her.

"Thank you." She thanked me with a sweet smile.

"You're welcome." I ran back to the drivers seat and hopped in the car.

"Where are we going?" She asked me as I started the car. I smiled at the road ahead of me.

"You'll see."

We arrived at a small diner on the corner of Maple street. This place had been a home for me for... forever.

"I know it's nothing fancy but this place is like a second home. It's special." I said hoping she got the message. She nodded and smiled.

"For someone special... It's perfect Finn. I don't need anything big and expensive." She said with that genuine smile I had grown to like. I smiled and nodded taking her hand in mine and bringing her inside.

We walked over to the corner table. We sat down and I felt awkward. Millie smiled at me.

"It's weird. You know that I am here on a date with you." She laughed looking away from me.

"How so?" I questioned.

"I mean, Finn you're a player." She said seriously. I furrowed my eyebrows and looked down.

"I don't want to be- or mean to be." I sighed sadly.

"I know you don't mean to be. Is it Iris?" I frowned and clenched my jaw. Who else would it be? Millie reached across the table and lifted my chin with her hand so I would look her in the eye.

"I mean... kind of."

"Kind of?"

"Yeah. You know, I dated her. And she cheated on me, not so surprisingly. After that I dated other girls and at first I was looking for a relationship but each time I found another girl Iris would scare them off. Until it became a game for her. She would threaten any girl who made eye contact with me. I wasn't purposefully a player." I told her as I crossed my arms over my chest.

"That sucks, Finn. I'm sorry." Millie apologized. I smiled gently at her.

"You have nothing to be sorry for."

"Yeah. And for your information, she won't scare me." I smiled and nodded. The waitress came over and took our order. We talked about random things, school, sports, family.

Seems like neither of us have a great family life. Even though now Millie has Sadie.

I know how she feels... losing her parents and all. My dad isn't gone... but he kind of is. Along with Millie's mom.

I couldn't help but ask when I finished my hamburger the question that was lingering at the back of my mind. "Where is your mom? Have you reached out to her after the accident?"

Millie sighed while chewing her food. She made sure to swallow before answering. "No I haven't seen her. Honestly I am scared to. I don't want to look into my moms eyes and see... and see that she doesn't know me."

I hated to pity Millie, but I did.

The next thing I said came out on it's own. I just said it unintentionally. "I could go with you to see your mom."

Millie furrowed her eyebrows and looked at me questionably. "Wait, what? No, no I'm fine. It's fine." She sighed as she shook her head. "I will go when I am ready. And when I am ready I will be able to go alone."

I nodded, understanding what she was saying. And the rest of the night was filled with laughter and... happiness which I hadn't felt in a while.

We were on Millie's doorstep saying goodbye.

"I had fun, Finn. Thank you for taking me." She said with a wide smile.

"I'm glad you had fun, me too. And I hope we can do this again soon?" I asked more than stated.

"Yes, of course. Bye Finn." She said.

"Bye Millie." And with that she kissed me on the cheek and disappeared behind her door leaving me... pleased with the night.
