So to non-Hetalia fans (you) this probably doesn't make much sense. "Well it's just a fanfic and you talk about it all the time so what more would I need to know?"
And I can obviously see where your coming from, but the thing is you still may not see where all these headcanons come from and why the character may seem so 'deep' when it's a comedy anime. Plus a lot of these characters I only sometimes mention. So that's where I come in to help you out as I act like I'm a professional writer and good at sentences!
Now you actually have a better insight on a lot of the characters more than a lot of the fandom did back in the early days! Yes you heard that right! Now I'm not saying most of the fandom thought like this but a good portion did.
Quite a bit of the time it would boil down to this.
Italy's a useless coward/precious cinnamon roll that must be protected at all costs (don't ask it's fandom language). Germany's very strict and/or a nazi (some of the fandom use to be disgusting). Japan is a shy and quiet person/non-feeling. America's an arrogant and ignorant a word that only cares about himself. Russia's a psychopath that abuses people for fun (I'm questioning the early fandom more and more). England's a tsundere. All China does is say aru. France is a pervert. Prussia is a loud narcissist that only cares about himself. Seychelles is getting in the way of the "ships". And the list goes on and on. So let's take a closer look and see what their really like shall we? (also you might understand my strange obsession a little more)
