The Rain

Rain.

It was softly falling in vertical torrents, splatting soundlessly onto the ground. It formed puddles, places where the water grouped together between the cracks in the pavement, and it reflected the moonlight and threw it back to the moon.
The stars were burning despite the rain. The clouds couldn't conceal them, and they made their presence known by turning the raindrops into fairy lights as they fell.

The air was quiet. The night was cold.

Taehyung's posture was slouched as he made his way through the dripping streets of dreary sundown. As if keeping his head down would repel his clothing from getting damp. But really, he didn't mind the rain, or the cold, or the fact that it was far too late to be out on the streets now.

He was looking for Jungkook.

There was never knowing where Jungkook would be at any given time on any given night. His curiosity called him out on nights like these and he would wander wherever his feet and eyes lead him with the absence of his conscious.

But he was never difficult to find despite this, and Taehyung knew all of his favourite places. On starry nights, Jungkook would climb up onto the roof of the nearby convenience shop - his favourite place to sit - and view the stars from there. The view wasn't spectacular, but Jungkook loved rooftop sitting almost as much as he loved the stars, and it wasn't difficult to clamber to the roof of this particular building.

He would sit there, alone, until Taehyung came along, wandering down the dark streets looking for him, his light steps sending ripples of water down the flooded sidewalks, echoing quietly against the surrounding building walls, and then Taehyung would come climb up next to him, and they would sit and talk together for hours in the growing darkness and the starlight, oblivious to time, until neither of them had energy to speak anymore. Then they were content with sitting in serene silence until the sun came up or they decided it time to go home.

They had done this so many times that it was almost routine for Taehyung to come wandering down that murky street, looking for the younger boy when he went out, and Taehyung wondered if it were routine enough for Jungkook to begin waiting for him each night.

From the top of the convenience shop, a boy's dark silhoutte stood out against the brilliantly-lit night sky. His head was tilted ever so to the right, his legs dangled leisurely over the edge of the building. He seemed unscathed by both rain and cold. In that moment, Taehyung thought, he looked just like a painting. It would have made a lovely photograph.

Silently, Taehyung clambered to the top of one of the cars parked in the near-vacant lot, and stood on the roof of it. Jungkook, who was now aware of his presence, scurried to bend down and offer his hand to the elder, who grasped it and pulled himself up to join his friend on the lonely rooftop.

He sat, bringing his legs up to his chest, and still neither of them said a word.

Taehyung could feel the mist on his face, he could hear Jungkook's slow breathing, and he could smell the rain - it smelled like grass, and puddles trapped in pavement cracks. It smelled like sitting on rooftops at nighttime in the dark rain.

And the silence was peaceful and beautiful.

It was a while before Jungkook spoke."Do you think the stars control our fate?" he asked thoughtfully. "I know everybody talks about it nonchalantly, but what if it were true?"

Jungkook was the only person who would ask such a question. If anybody else had asked it, Taehyung probably would have thought it a silly question. But coming from Jungkook, it seemed so honest and serious that Taehyung couldn't help but smile and think about it.
