Moving back to Toronto wasn't my first choice. Unfortunately it was my only choice. I will admit, being back feels nice but to an extent. Like the first day of school, we all loved it, but by day two we wanted the year to be over.
I moved here for a new job, I was going to work at Toronto Central Hospital. The last time I was at that hospital was when my mom died. I was 7. Ever since then, I never wanted to come back. Who knew I would be working there 20 years later.
This time things will go right for me.. at least I hope so. I had a rough childhood, but now I'm in charge of my life, no social workers, no over protective grandparents, no abusive dads. Just me myself, and I. Not like I haven't been trying to do things for myself since I was 7, but now it is up to me.
People always ask me "why did you become a doctor? Isn't that stressful?" The answer is yes. Being a surgeon is stressful but I'm doing what is best for me. I'm doing what wasn't done for my mom that night. The night my world fell apart. Someone has to do the job, and I am so glad I stepped up.
•TIME SKIP•
Here we are. My first day. My first day at Toronto Central Hospital, the moment my life on my own really starts.
I walk through the doors of the hospital, and walk straight to the nurses station.
"Hi, I'm looking for the chiefs office?" I spoke to the nurse sitting behind the desk doing charts.
" it is on the second floor, across the hall, first door on your right!" She flashed me a smile before going back to her charts.
"Thank you!" I turned to walk towards the stairs.
"And welcome to Toronto Central Hospital!" The nurse called out.
I followed her directions, and knocked on the door. The door opened quickly.
"You must be Dr. Dawson, Come in!" The chief was a taller man, who had dark brown hair and blue eyes. He looked friendly, but also like he could get angry in a minute.
I followed him into his office and sat in front of his desk. He opened a drawer and pulled out a folder.
"Welcome to Toronto Central Hospital, Dr.Dawson, we are quite happy to have you as our new head of general surgery."
"Thank you, sir. I am happy to be here." I gave the chief a half smile and looked down at my feet to make the situation less awkward.
"Please, call me Dr. Goulding." Dr.Goulding opened the folder and pulled out a contact. He handed me a pen so I could sign it. He opened a different drawer and pulled out a pager.
"This is your pager, you know how to use this, right?" I chuckled and nodded.
"Perfect! I have paged a doctor to give you a tour and help you out with everything else you may need."
"Thank you, Dr.Goulding." I responded.
Suddenly there was a knock on the door. It opened almost instantaneously, the chief smiled as a male doctor walked in.
This new doctor was tall, he had brown hair that looked a little messy, he had green eyes, and was quite muscular looking.
"Dr. Shield, this is Dr. Dawson. She is our new head of general, and I need you to show her around. " Dr. Shield nodded and I got up and walked towards the door.
"Welcome, again, to Toronto Central Hospital, we are lucky to have you!" The chief extended his hand for me, we shook hands. I grabbed my bag and followed Dr. Shield out the door.
