An accomplished student, athlete and community volunteer, George S. Langan has enjoyed a broad array of experiences over the course of his life. One such experience involved service as an Open Water Lifeguard; one that Langan completed during the summers of 2014 and 2015.

A lifeguard at Cazenovia's Village Park, George S. Langan came to appreciate the many important roles such a position entails. While accident prevention is perhaps the lifeguard's most significant and important role, such a professional is also responsible for:

Maintaining Constant Communication with Beachgoers and Staff.

Through established hand signals, whistling and verbal commands, the lifeguard must be able to effectively communicate problems and situations with colleagues and beachgoers.

Performing Rescues When Needed.

Lifeguards are well-versed in the techniques needed to safely remove swimmers from situations of danger.

Observing and Supervising Beach Behavior.

The lifeguard must remain alert throughout each shift, as well as to keep a close and watchful eye on the people and situations that can lead to something dangerous.
