I huffed in disappointment as I checked my pocket watch. I'm already thirty minutes late for my first day in school and if I don't hurry, I'll never see the end of it.
It is my goal to stay invisible as a new grade eleven student in Green Hill Academy and getting scold on the first day is definitely something that can make you not "invisible".
By the time I had reached the classroom, I was breathless from all the running but there was no time to lose. Without hesitation, I entered.
After that, I saw nothing except the floor. Why? You might ask.
Well, I can't help but look down to avoid all the stares from my supposedly classmates.
"Goodmorning." I greeted shyly. After all, I still have my manners and maybe this time it can save me.
Slowly, I looked up to find all the students staring at me, but what caught my eye was the teacher fuming in anger. Blast it!
"Last for the first day of class. Hardly seems appropriate, don't you think? I'll be watching you. "
I swallowed a lump that formed in my throat and hurriedly sat on the empty seat near the door.
Fortunately, the professor was not in the mood to torment me further and continued with his lecture. All the other students fortunately thought that the lecture about world history is much more interesting than me so they focused their attention on the former. I had no qualms about that and I managed to survive throughout the period.
Soon after, lunch came and I was glad. There is no doubt that I eat lunch alone. Of course, I always do. I am a solivagant person and I'm happier being alone. However, it seems that I do not share the same understanding as those around me.
Who would have thought that the school I am in is full of sociable persons and clubs. There is no one like me here. Simply put, I obviously do not belong here.
But why am I here in this infernal school?
Well, it's because of my infernal aunt. My parents both died in a car crash and I was left alone in the care of my mother's sister until I come of age.
Don't get me wrong. She doesn't treat me like a maid in her house. I eat meals with her and her husband everyday, I have my own personal room and I got everything that I need. Emphasis on need and not want.
The problem with her is that she holds so much value to her name. She wants me to not embarass her in front of her friends during tea time so she had to send me to a private school so she could brag about it.
Deep down, I know that she and her husband are soulmates. They both share the same love. Love of money, fame, honor, and power.
In order to live well among them, I had to follow all their rules. Well, it's better than having no home at all. It will be over in two years anyway.
The rest of the day passed by in a blur, soon it was time for dismissal and I felt better. All I wanted was to not be sorrounded by girl whining about stupid things or boys bragging everything and anything their tiny minds could grasp.
I needed the comfort of my room. It's the only place I feel safe in this infernal world.
My aunt's house is not too far away from school so I only walk on the way. I am not in a hurry since they would probably be working late again. My aunt is a doctor and my uncle, a lawyer. They never had a child because of their hectic schedules and I start to wonder whether it is the reason why they seem to have no feelings at all.
Taking the last turn towards their house, I rushed over to the blue gate and rang the doorbell.
After a while, an woman with lots of grey hair opened the gate for me.
"Goodafternoon, Anna. " I greet her as I entered the house.
"Miss Samantha, I have prepared dinner for you."
I smiled at her and went into the dining room.
Ana is the only caretaker of the house and I'm worried that because of her old age, she might not stay longer. I don't know what I'd do without her because she is the one who makes the house alive. She's the reason I still keep my sanity after a two years of living in this house.
I ate dinner fast and thanked Anna. I hurried towards my room.
Finally, peace at last. The day has been good. Though, I was late for class, I've gotten off with just a mere warning. No one really seemed to be interested in being the friend of the new girl or the one to bully the new girl. Otherwise, it would have been catastrophic. I was really better off alone.
Today is really a good day and I was fortunate that today is my birthday. I was able to keep a low profile and did not get into trouble.
I am lying on the bed when an idea came to me.
Even though I didn't celebrate my birthday, or even no one greeted me, it's still my birthday after all, right?
I guess this is the perfect day to make a birthday wish.
"I wish for better days to come. " I whispered into nothingness but nevertheless, I smile.
Who knows? Maybe today is really the start of good days.
With a smile on my face, I turned off my bedside lamp and drifted off to sleep.
