It all started when my Dad asked me to help him burn some bank statements. He wouldn't tell me what for, but I wasn't bothered by that because burning stuff is entertaining. It wasn't until a few weeks later that I realised what I was burning wasn't so innocent.
On the following Tuesday afternoon, there was a heavy knock at my front door. I saw a tall, broad shouldered police man staring down at my mother's worried face, he was asking if he could speak to Katie Sinclair regarding a matter involving Michael Sinclair and Sara Dove. My Mum turned around to see me standing at the top of the stairs. I walked down the stairs and followed the policeman outside to his car. I had no idea what my dad and his girlfriend had done but I just assumed that they wanted to talk to me because I'm his daughter.
Sat across from two investigators, my hands were clammy and my leg would not stop shaking. I started to clench my fists and felt my nails dig into my palms. As soon as the investigators told me that my father and his girlfriend had been receiving large sums of money. I unclenched my fists and my leg stopped shaking. I was calm. They wanted to know if I knew anything. I told them no. But secretly, in the back of my mind, I knew. I knew who was giving my dad money. I knew so much, more than they could have ever imagined. But lying to the police felt so good. It gave me this buzz that I had never felt before.
I wanted to feel it again. Over and over again.
As I walked out of the police station I saw my mum standing outside her car. She looked.... disappointed. The first thing she said was "Why did they want to talk to you?" I just told her "They thought dad was involved with something, and because I'm his daughter, they just wanted to ask me a few questions. Nothing serious, don't stress about it." We got in the car and drove home. Without saying a word.
That was when I realised that this was what I was meant to do. This is what I had been wanting to do for my entire 15 years of life. I wanted to live life dangerously.
