Chief Andrews was sitting at his desk. A think manila emviope was sitting in front of him, looking untouched. There where two smaller ones sitting off to the side on the thicker one. Chief had his folded in from the other thicker one. No one dear to speak.
Chief took a deep breath before saying, "Look, I'm just going to get straight to the point. We're closing the case. There hasn't been any new evidence in 2 year. The trail has gone cold."
My partner, Agent Jacob Carson was about to protest and argue, but Chief held up his hand to silence him. I on the other hand didn't move. Didn't make a peep.
"I don't want to hear it Carson." Chief said. "There is no new evidence. Its end of the story. You are my best agents and I know what this case mean to you. To the both of you." Chief turned his gaze to me, expecting me to say something, but I stayed silent. "I'm sorry but the cased it closed."
Chief Andrews was in his late 50's. He was a genital old man, but he was stern. What he said goes, and there was no arguing with it. Sure Jacob and I could have pressed him more about keeping the case open, but I didn't want to.
"I want reports on my desk at the end of the day about Case R285." Chief said. "You are both dismissed.
Jacob turn and walked out the door, but I stood rooted in place. When he saw that I wasn't behind him he turned, "Prescott, let go."
I didn't turn to look at him, tears filled my eyes. Chief looked up from his paperwork and met my eyes. I silently asked him to not say a word yet.
"I need to talk to the chief about something." I said.
"Then I should be here, where partners." Jacob said.
"No, this doesn't concern you." I said. Oh but it did.
I heard Jacob inhale sharply, surprised. We also did thing together. Meeting, missions, you name it and we where both there.
Chief nodded at Jacob. The door slammed shut, and I knew that he knew that I was hiding something from him.
Chief got up from his leather chair and walk around his desk. "Come her child." He opened his arms and I all but fell into them.
I broke down crying then. Sobbing, Chief rubbed small circled on my. He didn't say anything. He new that I would talk when I was ready.
I pushed away from him and took a deep breath. I knew I had to tell him but I just didn't know how to.
Chief lead me other to the small leather couch in the corner of his office. "Scarlett, what's wrong?"
"I'm pregnant." I blurted out. When Chief didn't say anything, I started crying again. I cried into my hands this time. "I'm pregnant and I cant tell Jake. He loves his job and he loves the Institute. And I cant ask him to leave. I cant do that to him. I would hate myself for it. I'm so scared Uncle."
Not only is Andrews the Chief but he is also my Uncle. The only blood family that I really have left.
"Oh, Scarlett." Chief said. "Honey, you need to tell him. He has the right to know."
"I know," I sniffled. "But I'm leaving. I handing in my resignations papers. I love my job, and I love my team. But I can't raise a child here. Not in the line of work that Jake and I do."
"How far along are you?" Chief asked.
"About a month and a half." I said.
Chief took a deep breath. "I see why now you didn't argue about me closing the case."
Silence fell upon us. I waited, I could tell the Chief was trying to figure out the best thing to do. Every time he went to open his mouth to say something he closed it again and shoot his head.
Chief looked down at his hands. "As your Chief, I am disappointed," I hung my head even lower. "But, as your Uncle, I am very proud of you and I'm going to miss you."
I snap my head up to meet his grey eyes, they had tears in them. We got to our feet and he pulled me into his arms.
"Oh Uncle," I sobbed into his neck.
"You're going to be okay. You both will be. Jacob is going to be pissed, but he'll understand that you did this for both him and your child." Uncle said. "Don't worry about any of the paper work. Go pack, I'm sure you already have a place picked out. And I'll keep Jacob busy for as long as I can."
"Yes, I'm moving to the family cabin." I said pulling out of Uncle's arms. "Its about an 6 hours drive from here. Please don't tell Jacob where I will be. Just tell him that I left him and that I couldn't do this anymore."
Uncle nodded him head. "Yes, but you should know that he wont let this go. He will try and find you. But just know that you will always have a home and are always welcomed here. I'm going to miss you Scar."
"I love you Uncle, I have a note to Jake. Can you give it to him for me." I pulled out the letter form my back pocket. I give it a kiss and hand it over to Chief. "I'll call you when I get to the cabin. Please come visit when you can."
With that I walked out the Chief's door and I didn't look back. If I did I would break down again. I walked out the glass stair case, there was no one in sight. I placed and hand on my stomach, trying to imagine my new life.
Was I ready? Could I do this? What is the future to hold? What will happen to Jacob? Will he forgive me?
These where the questions that I asked myself as I walked out the front door without looking back.
