I'm normal. I mean, I'm normal for a seventeen year old mermaid princess. Sounds cheesy, right? Well, it is cheesy, but it's true. My father is the King of The Sea. Well, kind of. He was. That's the reason I'm sitting on some guy's bed, my black as nights scales twinkling around my ankles, hips, wrists, and breasts. He stares down at me, my eyes pleading for him not to hurt me.
"Y-you're weak." I whisper, trying to find confidence even I know I don't have. This makes him laugh, an evil, guttural sound halfway between a laugh and a cough.
"Oh?" He holds up a giant hand, and with a loud smack, his hand hits my face with a crack, sending my flying off the bed. The chain around my throat tugs me back up, and he laughs, waving it around. I feel exposed, I feel humiliated. I know why Dad sent me here, though it doesn't comfort me knowing that.
"You're a dumb child, Amphitrite." He sneers and a soft whimper escaped my lips. This makes him bloat with pride, knowing he scares me.
"She is not." A soft voice answers, a tone of authority sneaking into his voice. "Dad, take off the chain.. It's cutting into her neck." He was right, small pools of blood were gathered in the crook of my collarbones. I look up to see who came to my rescue, to be faced with a large hand. I back away, not wanting to be hit again.
"No. it's alright. Let me help you up." A strange voice says, and I look up to meet a pair of dark, ginger-gold eyes trimmed with thick black lashes.
"O-okay." I Grab his hand, and wince as they touch. Quickly, he pulls me to his side, my face tucked into his shoulder. He's wearing heavy leather armor, covered in medals and patches. I immediately know who it is.
"Sir Lincoln..?" I whisper, and he pats the back of my hair, shushing me.
"Lincoln!" The king's voice bellows, loud and clear. Lincoln turns to him, still hugging me to his chest. He brushes his yellow hair away from his tan face.
"Father..." he starts. "You can't do this! Lady Amphitrite is a person too.." He runs a hand through my silver hair, to prove his point.
"LINCOLN." he repeats. "Give me back my wife, and get OUT!" The final word bounces around the blackened room, which covered in skulls and bones. I would have liked it, if it wasn't a torture chamber.
Sir Lincoln goes quiet, so I turn around and pipe up.
"I am your wife, as said by the Court of The Sea... and I shall serve my husband and king." I whisper, and walk to his side. Lincoln's grabs for my hand, but misses.
"Amy-" he calls me by my childhood nickname. "This man tortures you! He hits you!" He motions to the large bruise already forming on my cheek. He steps forward and yanks me away from the king.
"I don't want you to get hurt..." I whisper. I hear a thunk behind me, and turn quickly.
"Dad!" Lincoln kneels next to the king, who lies motionlessly on the floor. I stand behind Lincoln, gaping at the sight.
"Heart attack." Lincoln says sadly. "Must have been the excitement. He was old though..."
Suddenly, a guard bursts into the room and charges us.
"Run!" Lincoln yells to me, grabbing my hand and running to an open window.
"Wait! I-I can't!" I whisper, he ignores me and shoves me out the window. It's a thirty foot fall into the ocean below. The water stings, and my legs attach to each other, before forming a glorious, black tail.
