*told in first person*

Everyday was the same routine: wake up, go to school, sleep.  I knew nothing would happen to me throughout my entire high school experience. However, things changed during my sophomore year of high school. Yeah I know, I've only been in high school for one year, but I've finally started to enjoy school. I don't live in the nicest neighborhood, in fact it's basically the ghetto but it's home to me. Everyone that lives here all knows the number one basic rule: mind you're own business. The reason why that's the number one rule is because we have a couple of gangs, they won't harm you unless you do something stupid. Anyway, growing up,my family was never really home. I've always been alone in that house. The only person in my family that I can count on is my sister. My parents were always out because they have to work many jobs in order to keep the house we live in. My brother...well he got into some mess and now in a gang. I know he's safe because he's one of the smart ones and comes to visit every now and then. And for my sister, she lives with her boyfriend, away from this place. She comes to check up on me and if I need to get away I know I could go live with her. Next comes my three best friends. Kehlani, Angela, and Joel. Let's just say we've grown up with each other and we know how to keep each other out of trouble and safe. Everyone has a reputation here and everyone knows each other. All the girls are always catcalled by some nasty ass creep and all the boys are either in a gang or do side jobs for other people. Joel, he's in a gang but he's in the same one as my brother and has more freedom than others. Finally, our high school. Now if you saw it in person, then you would actually be surprised. You would think it's some trashy place, but in reality it's pretty decent and big. We have a football field, a pool, a nice cafeteria, and bathrooms. Most of the students are athletes and are super smart. But the academics here is trash.
School started a couple of months ago and we now only have two more months left before we're juniors. I was just going with the flow of high school just like  I normally would, but something changed. I've made a couple of "new" friends. Now I call them "new" because I've known them for a long time, it's just now we started to hang out. My friend group is basically my family and we protect one another. Ever since I've had a new friend group I've been enjoying high school more. Freshman year was trash because I've made a lot of fake ass friends and had a trashy boyfriend, but now I'm happy as ever and matured a bit. Now that I've gotten the basic information out of the way, why don't I tell you why everything changed this year for me.
Oh yes there were parties and lots of them. There were always the couples making out, people throwing up from drinking too much, and the people who never associate themselves with other people. Joel, Angela, Kehlani and I always showed up to these parties because if you didn't go then you're window would have a rock thrown through it. We mostly just talk to people and hang out and never get drunk. Until one night, we decided to do a few shots. Bad choice indeed because no one could hold their liquor. But that night wasn't so bad because that's where we met two of our closest friends: Oscar and Dwayne. They were one grade above us and the two popular basketball players that almost all the girls went after. They both do side jobs for one of the gangs, so basically they just tag other gangs territories hoping they won't get caught. During the party, a gun shot went off and everyone scattered. The police came by and called for everyone to go inside because it was a lock down. Oscar and Dwayne looked lost so I took their hands and told them to come with me. So all six of us ran to my house since no one was there anyway. The power went out which was just what we needed. We lit every candle that was in my house and that's when we all got to know each other and became tight.
Every day at lunch we all sat together and we would stay out late doing the most. The only time we didn't get to see each other was when Oscar and Dwayne had to do their job and Joel was out beating the crap out of someone with the rest of his gang. Every time they were out, I would get worried, but once they came back they were back to making me laugh 24/7. Because I lived alone most of the time, Angela and Oscar stayed over at my house since they don't have anywhere to go. Oscar would repay me buy driving us to school and Angela would buy the food.
We all woke up the next morning and headed off to school, where chaos would begin.

**Note: hey guys so this is the first chapter and I hope you like it. I know it might be boring but I just wanted to get some basic information out there so later on things would get confusing. So look forward to the next chapter!
