Mackenzie runs. As fast as she ever has before almost like a cheetah after its prey, but this time? She's the prey. Stumbling over twigs and fallen branches she fights against the pelting rain which burns her eyes and is like shards of glass ripping through her cheeks but she continues to run. The footsteps which boom behind her suddenly fade away and she stops, looking behind her. She bends over, her hands on her knees panting. This was the hardest thing she'd ever have to do but it was necessary, running from him made her safe and she wanted to live. She starts to walk slowly but her legs scream in protest so she climbs onto a low branch and perches herself safely between it and the trunk. She closes her eyes and shelters her face from the harsh rain and wind. Somehow she manages to sleep.
When morning breaks she cracks her eyes open and stretches. She still hadn't quite gotten used to the birds no longer chirping in the mornings but she assumed it was because they were no longer happy to see another day and no longer seeing the beauty in the day for them to sing. Much like her and how she can no longer see the beauty in the world. And as she see's the sun for what feels like the first time in an eternity she partially covers her eyes to adjust to the long-forgotten sun. She jumps down and grabs a fresh apple from her backpack which she had stolen from him before she ran, she was only ever given the rotten cores to gnaw on. Mackenzie finds a stream in the woods and bathes her sore feet in the cool, slow running water. There wasn't any sign of life in these parts. She took in the silence that she hadn't heard in years. She hears a twig snap and she looks around pulling out her pistol which she obtained when she stole them from the guard she locked in her cell after kicking him in a part that gave her so much pain before. She aims it around her keeping her eyes wide open. Maybe it's him? maybe its one of those creatures she heard the man talk about? Who knows but the slow footsteps which crunched the fallen leaves made her panic and she stands and turns. To see a bunny hopping slowly around gnawing on some grass she laughs at how close a peaceful creature could live near a place of such horror. She remembers that she was taken when she was thirteen but she lost count how long ago that was.
