Fraka Harmsen received herPh.D. in Geology from Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, includinga year in residence at the University of Miami, Florida from 1981 to 1982.She completed her post-doctorate work at the Universityof Montana in 1985, and that same year began working in the California StateUniversity system, where she remains. Her many accolades include theWoman of Distinction Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Cal StateSacramento community.
