Every time JD saw a plane, he thought of his brother.

Tommy flew heavy bombers in the Pacific. JD hadn't heard from him in months.

JD knew his momma was taking it hard. Both of her children were on opposite sides of the ocean from her and opposite sides of a continent from each other. 

He had few material things growing up. The money troubles hadn't worried him. JD had Tommy and Tommy had JD. They didn't need anything to entertain themselves besides each other.

Every time JD saw a plane, he hoped his brother was still in the air.
